Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences (PNWU) was founded as a 501(c) (3) non-profit health care education institution in 2005 aimed at increasing access to health care in medically underserved areas of the Pacific Northwest.

 

The University currently offers the degrees of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Doctor of Physical Therapy, Master of Arts in Medical Science, and Master of Science in Occupational Therapy enrolling over 550 students annually with plans to develop other programs and/or colleges. Interprofessional education partnerships with other universities adds another 100 students to the population. The campus includes 300 employees with academic programming spread over a five state region.

 

PNWU is located in Yakima, WA, a city of approximately 95,000 located in the south central part of the state near the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains in a major agricultural and outdoor recreation region. As a simulated patient at Pacific Northwest University College of Osteopathic Medicine (PNWU) you will be trained to portray, in a consistent, standardized manner, a patient in a medical situation. You will be required to simulate the "patient's" history, physical findings, and emotions in a repeatable and standardized manner.

Your encounters for examination will include appointments you may see in urgent care or family care doctor's office. These would include listening to heart sounds, lung sounds, abdominal sounds; looking in your nose, ears, eyes, mouth; taking a blood pressure; checking your reflexes and muscle strength; and performing gentle osteopathic manipulative treatments. You will not be asked to take any type of medication nor have any blood or body samples taken for testing at any time during the exam. Since this is a hands-on examination, students will be required to lower your gown, touch, palpate, and examine the SP based on the chief complaint of the encounter.
