Virginia Mason Memorial Director - Specialty Practice Operations in Yakima, Washington


The Specialty Practice Operations Director is responsible for leadership and operations of assigned specialty clinics. Provides oversight and improvement of healthcare delivery systems, program planning, daily operations, implementation of policy and adherence to regulatory requirements, staff supervision, fiscal management, and ongoing evaluation at designated facilities. The Director collaborates across the Virginia Mason Memorial health system and the community to ensure best practices are implemented in our patient centered efforts.


  1. Works in a dyadic model with specialty practice physicians and key leadership in developing and implementing the clinic's strategic long and short-term goals and business plans.

  2. Works closely with VMM stakeholders in forecasting and preparing annual budget and financial statements.

  3. Represents specialty clinic and interacts with regulatory agencies, insurance carriers, and other professional and community groups.

  4. Participates in contract negotiations as requested.

  5. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and industry standards and requirements.

  6. Completes financial proformas and assembles other financial documents for support and prioritization of capital expenditures.

  7. Is an effective, approachable leader who maintains open lines of communication.

  8. Ensures that specialty clinic operations are being overseen and directed in accordance to best practices and evidence based approaches.

  9. Demonstrates ability to meet goals with quality, safety and patient/family satisfaction integrated into operational planning.

  10. Ensures operations are conducted in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the organization. Enforces organizational policies and procedures.

  11. Works with assigned specialty clinics in ensuring staffing and all other resource use is in alignment with patient demand for services. Ensures consistent care/experience that is in alignment with all internal and external contractual agreements.

  12. Ensures all patient complaints are addressed.

  13. Fosters and maintains strong communication between management and medical providers.

  14. Is actively involved in ensuring standard clinic work is in alignment with division expectations.

  15. Develops and implements the necessary organizational performance measures and monitors operational functions.

  16. Ensures promotion of effective communication throughout assigned clinics. Consistently demonstrates key organization and operational information and is communicated systematically to all clinic employees.

  17. Analyzes existing programs to improve efficiency and quality of services. Assures operational effectiveness of existing programs.

  18. Maintains positive community/ongoing relations and serves as a liaison between the Virginia Mason Memorial health system and the community. Assists in educating the community on clinic services and healthcare issues.

  19. Works in conjunction with Human Resources department in interviewing, training, on boarding, transfers, promotions and employee relations concerns.

  20. Models the implementation and use of VMPS in improvement work.

  21. Routinely seeks input from others on how to improve operations and outcomes.


Education: Bachelor degree in business or related field required. A Masters and/or graduate degree in health, business administration or a related field is preferred. Related experience may be substituted in lieu of education.

Experience: Minimum of three years of progressive management experience required. Clinical leadership experience in complex health care delivery systems preferred.

Licenses/Certificates/Registration: Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance required.
