About The Role:

The Mechanical Design Engineer engages with the Precor engineering team to deliver industry-leading levels of quality and reliability for exercise equipment. The ideal candidate will join our Design, Build, Test culture; exercising their expertise, the Precor Model Shop and Test resources to bring concepts to life.

Mechanical Design Engineers collaborate closely on cross-functional groups to develop Precor products. The incumbent is expected to engineer solutions to design problems that meet and exceed customer expectations for function, ease of use, reliability, durability, and initial quality. Design engineers at Precor perform a variety of tasks requiring technical knowledge, creativity and the ability to work both independently and with others.

You Will Be Responsible For: Technical Problem Solving, Cost Reduction, Design, Documentation and Continuous Improvement

  • Research projects using field reliability data, direct observation, and customer feedback to set scope, identify constraints and establish design requirements

  • Develop designs to meet functional, cost, reliability and manufacturability goals

  • Analyze designs using hand calculations, FEA and spreadsheet based calculators

  • Prepare review materials to solicit feedback from design and development team

  • Document solutions using Solidworks

  • Coordinate prototype builds in Precor model shop for evaluation

  • Plan engineering confidence and design validation tests

  • Validate designs in conjunction with Precor Test Engineering Group

  • Analyze test results against reliability targets and field performance data

  • Maintain accurate and complete CAD models and assemblies

  • Follow ECN process to keep documentation up-to-date

  • Create new variants of existing products to support Precor’s business

  • Write concise, timely reports of test results and engineering experiments

  • Utilize company processes, tools and practices while working to continually improve them

  • Identify, capture, and implement tools, methods, processes and equipment, which improve the capability of the department

  • Acquire and apply skills necessary to accomplish the above

  • Collaborate with other engineers within the company, helping them develop concepts, refine designs, analyze and problem solve

To Be Successful in the Role:

Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job, will be considered

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Product Design Engineering.

  • Advanced degree desirable

  • Minimum 4 years of product design/engineering experience, including the use of standard mechanical engineering analysis and software (i.e. FEA, kinematics and tolerance analysis).

  • Ability to use industry standard CAD systems for design and documentation

  • Effective communicator

  • Ability to assemble effective reports and presentations to communicate ideas using Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Comfortable speaking in a small group setting

  • Comfortable using a white board to discuss ideas in a small group setting

  • Familiarity with PLM and an ECN process

  • Experience in some combination of the following:

  • Kinematic design of linkages and mechanisms

  • Design for manufacturability and assembly

  • Design and manufacture of plastic molded parts

  • Design and manufacture of sheet metal, bent tube and welded components

  • Design of cast and powder metal parts

  • The selection and design of power transfer products such as bearings, shafting, screw drives, pulleys and belts

  • Analyzing components and assemblies for static strength and fatigue life

  • Knowledge and application of technical problem solving techniques

  • Ability to handle simultaneous tasks in an environment which can be stressful at times

  • Ability to follow established technical standards, methods and priorities

  • Design to prototype experience, selecting and sourcing the appropriate prototyping methods to build engineering prototypes

  • Experience with engineering validation testing, planning, administering, and responding

  • Hands-on shop experience is a plus


Normal office conditions, including occasional external customer interface. Occasional work in the assembly process areas and the mechanical model shop will be necessary. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
