Key Technology Mechanical Engineer in Walla Walla, Washington
JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: Designs, specifies and tests major components and subsystems of automated inspection systems and conveying systems. Plans, directs, coordinates and at times performs activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical components and subsystems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Able to design major system components and subsystems from initial concept to production. Uses engineering tools such as 3D CAD and analysis packages in the design process. Develops and implements functionality and reliability tests of designs.
Responsible for designing any special test equipment or fixturing for reliability and functionality tests. Develops methods and procedures for testing major components or subsystems.
Solves problems related to the design, manufacture, function and reliability of equipment. Gathers data from the field, manufacturing floor, quality control and other sources in determining cause of the problem. Uses structured problem solving techniques in finding the solutions to problems related to major components and subsystems.
Works with the Manufacturing Engineering group to develop processes for the manufacture of components and subsystems. Works directly with suppliers on specification, development and application of purchased parts.
Plans and directs support personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and in the testing of components or subsystems.
Works with the quality control group to make sure parts conform to specifications. Develops quality plans for parts.
Travels to customer sites to install beta test components and subsystems and to assist/advise in the repair of existing equipment. Works directly with customers to solve performance and reliability related problems with components and subsystems.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May be asked to lead small teams in designing major components or subsystems or in a structured problem solving task of a subsystem or major component.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE BSME or related field with three to five or more years of related experience. MSME or related field with zero to two years or related experience.
Experienced in designing major components and subsystems of food processing equipment. Demonstrated experience in the design of sheet metal, machined, extruded, cast and molded parts. Knowledge of welding and the design and specification of weldments.
LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as solving multiple equations and differential equations. Ability to solve complex engineering problems using mathematical techniques.
TECHNICAL SKILLS AutoCAD and 3D CAD (CREO/ProE Preferred) Modeling using FEM Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing Structured problem solving techniques
