PeaceHealth System Medical Director/Hospital Epidemiologist of Infection Prevention in Vancouver, Washington

New opportunity for a .5 FTE MD/DO System Medical Director/Hospital Epidemiologist of Infection Prevention . Position is based in Vancouver, Washington (Portland metro) however the selected physician may primarily work remotely from a location in Washington, Oregon or Alaska. Join a nationally recognized community infection prevention program. Our team offers ample support and collaboration within a group of 26 Infection Preventionists.

The Medical Director will focus on the PeaceHealth mission that every patient receives safe, compassionate care; every time, every touch. This is done by minimizing the risk of healthcare-associated infections in patients, caregivers, and visitors. The System Infection Prevention Director manages the overall IPC program, with the Medical Director providing clinical expertise to the program and liaison with leadership, clinicians, and staff. The Medical Director will have the ability to develop rapport and credibility with all stakeholder groups and exhibit strong peer leadership and change management.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Promote the goals and objectives of the Infection Prevention & Control Department. These goals are determined annually, as documented in the IPC Risk Assessment and program goals.

  • Standing Huddles and Meetings/li>

  • with IPC team members to contribute to goals remaining on track.

  • Maintain up to date knowledge and critical understanding of healthcare epidemiology and infectious disease literature, regulatory policies, controversies, and current events.

  • Use knowledge and expertise to guide the prioritization of activities, evaluation of surveillance systems, and institutional response to emerging infectious diseases.

  • Act as liaison to local, state, and federal health departments for IPC-related topics.

  • Participate in media communications for IPC-related topics.

  • in the creation, review, and revision of documents, presentations, and publications intended for the dissemination of IPC-related surveillance, policy, and research.

  • HAI Surveillance and Participation

  • Collaboration with other departments and stakeholders within PeaceHealth's three-state system, as well as working with national, state, and local public health and healthcare quality and safety organizations to foster collaborative HAI prevention improvement projects and research activities.

  • Provide teaching and mentorship to students who are interested in careers in healthcare epidemiology or infection control.

  • Work with Quality Patient Safety (QPS), Clinical Risk Management, and Marketing/Communications departments to ensure effective internal communication and implementation of Infection Prevention strategies and interventions.

Job Summary

Qualifications

  • MD/DO from U.S. ACGME accredited residency and/or fellowship program.

  • Preferred: ABIM Certification in Infectious Diseases.

  • Preferred: Certification in Infection Control (CIC) or willingness to become certified.

  • Completion of SHEA/CDC healthcare epidemiology course or equivalent. (May be completed after hire).

  • Ability to evaluate and interpret national guidelines (e.g. SHEA, HICPAC, CDC), and to integrate guidelines appropriately based on local epidemiology and institutional policies and priorities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to motivate, teach, and facilitate individuals and groups, including peers.

  • Ability to handle controversial issues with a professional, diplomatic, tactful communication style.

  • BLS certification or ability to obtain during onboarding process.

  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
