Overview

HP’s Global Head of Circular Materials will be responsible for leading HP’s end to end Circular Materials program, including our goal that 75% of our raw and pack materials will come from circular sources by 2030. This executive leader will report directly to HP’sChief Sustainability Officer and partner directly with HP’s cross functional design, R&D, business, and supply chain teams to re-invent the next generation of circular materials. This leader will own creating a new centralized center of excellence (COE) around circular materials/innovation across Personal Systems (PC’s & Peripherals), Print, Supplies (ink, toner, and paper consumables), 3D Printing, and emerging businesses. Many of the circular materials HP needs to deliver world class quality and performance do not exist at scale today. This team will help drive core materials innovation outside of the normal new product development/launch cycle to accelerate sustainable design.

The ultimate goal is to ensure HP meets our industry leading goal that 75% of our raw materials and packaging will come from circular sources by 2030. Key materials include plastics, metals, glass, paper fibers, and a wide range of other electronics related raw materials. This team will also help with designing for reuse/repair by looking at materials that can increase the overall product lifecycle. This is a critical element in the goal of driving carbon footprint reduction, circular materials, customer satisfaction, and sales growth by accelerating our journey to be the world’s most sustainable and just tech company.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Build a center of excellence around low carbon and circular materials. Lead a growing core team of cross functional leaders across R&D, Product Design, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Product Stewardship.

  • Ensure HP is on track to meet our 2030 and 2040 sustainability goals. Personally build and lead HP’s circular materials vision and roadmap for the decade ahead.

  • Ensure current and future products meet rapidly evolving customer, regulatory, and circular materials standards globally enabling emerging market access requirements. Ability to lead the team through complex and often ambiguous standards.

  • Partner with R&D and Product Stewardship teams to design-in low carbon and circular material requirements as part of New Product Innovation (NPIs) or New Services (NSIs).

  • Brand Ambassador – partner with HP’s Corporate Affairs organization to shape the external narrative around circular materials, reuse, recycling, and overall product circularity.

  • Provide internal/external thought leadership through benchmarking, industry surveys, active engagement with partners and consultants.

  • Responsible for performance management, talent management and succession planning of the circular materials innovation team. Based off the pan HP nature of this role, may be responsible for significant dotted-line employee reporting relationships as we grow cross-functional skills.

  • Communications – responding to customer, employee, government, and key stakeholder inquiries related to HP’s Circular Materials strategy and progress. Be cable of representing HP’s overall Sustainable Impact program and detailed Climate/Circularity pillar externally at industry events and conferences.

  • Ability to influence at an executive level across functions developing deep technical, regulatory, and customer insights to proactively influence leadership across multiple Business Units.

  • High visibility and impact – you will be a trusted 1:1 technical advisor.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field.

  • 15+ years of experience leading teams within a hands-on innovation environment. Deep experience in material development, product design, manufacturing, or other circular materials related fields.

  • Working experience with respect to developing and implementing a long-term circular materials roadmap. Hands-on experience successfully leading meaningful circular materials design, product innovation, manufacturing scale-up and end of life reuse/recycling within a global company.

  • Experience with next generation low carbon materials.

  • Working knowledge of ESG (Environmental and Social Governance) and SER (Social and Environmental Responsibility) concepts like carbon accounting and sustainable impact.

  • Experience within electronics industry and/or related materials is a strong plus.

  • Experience working with traditional Asia based electronics Original Design Manufacturer (ODMs), Contract Manufacturer (CMs), and component/commodity suppliers is desired.

  • Experience managing materials science related activities such as glass, plastic and metal development, testing, and qualification.

  • Ability to build forward-thinking partnerships with internal/external partners and suppliers. Working understanding of the end-to-end supply chain processes and strategy requirements.

  • Ability to translate complex concepts/data into simple to understand business reports and meaningful leadership insights.

  • Strong business acumen – ability to define problems and translate findings into a clear business case with tangible pros/cons, cost, and risk analysis. Applies a solid understanding of HP's financial systems and business models to prioritize the team’s work, while helping refine future business opportunities.

  • Courageous leadership – willingness to tackle planet size problems and leading cross-functional and executive conversations as we work toward sourcing 75% of raw materials and packaging from circular sources by 2030.
