Director, Chief of Staff for Chief Legal Officer

About the role – Chief of Staff (CoS)

As Chief of Staff, you will report into the Chief Legal Officer. This role will have the opportunity to drive strategy and execution across HP’s legal organization and work with our most senior executives within GLA and across the company to enable business outcomes to be met. This position requires strong cross-functional collaboration at all levels, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build strategy, articulate objectives and drive execution.

The Chief of Staff will provide the CLO / Global Legal Affairs team with strategic thought leadership, business planning leadership, operational rigor, participate in overall strategy discussions, lead key strategic initiatives and/or, and facilitate business execution.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

Business Strategy & Operations

  • Develop and drive strategic business programs

  • Use data and insights to enable the organization to operate effectively. 

  • Partner with the leadership team to make proposals on the org priorities and investment decisions, and gain alignment with the GLA Leadership Team

  • Ensure budget and resourcing is aligned to key business priorities

Leader and Leadership Team Enablement

  • Lead and manage LT staff meetings and operations including weekly huddles, quarterly F2F, Quarterly Reviews, MBOs/metrics management, and staff engagement.

  • Drive preparation and achieve outcomes for leader meetings, presentations, and internal/external engagement (i.e., CEO-level and Board of Directors reviews)

  • Responsible for internal/external communications strategy, planning and calendar of activities

  • Equip the CLO to lead effectively in key internal and external executive meetings (i.e., messaging definition, storyboarding, communicating needs/gathering information, and organizing it in a compelling way)

Employee Experience

  • Partner with HR to execute on employee recognition & development programs / activities

  • Understand the pulse and sentiment of the organization

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Masters’ Degree in Business, Engineering, Technology or related field or equivalent experience

  • Relevant experience, including experience in Management Consulting, Business Planning, Program/Project Management

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven track record of project/program leadership including leading global, cross-functional initiatives that impact the organization

  • Strong analytical thinking, analysis, problem solving skills, process orientation, and business acumen skills

  • High degree of flexibility and the ability to work within a fluid, constantly changing environment

  • Demonstrated experience proposing, creating, and managing executive-level proposals and presentations.

  • Highly developed collaboration, relationship building, and communication skills

  • Ability influence without authority and experience leading/navigating large cross-functional teams

  • Proven ability to work with/influence across all levels and functions within the organization to achieve actionable results through others

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and quality of deliverables; demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities (both long and short term) simultaneously

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including negotiation and influence skills, and group facilitation.

  • Ability to communicate complex or abstract ideas clearly and succinctly.


  • Strategic Project Management: The successful candidate will have experience in managing key company-wide initiatives

  • Strong Business Acumen : The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to identify customer or organizational needs and use contextual knowledge to evolve services and create effective strategies and programs to drive business growth.

  • Setting Strategy : The successful candidate will have the ability to set a vision, communicate that vision, and develop the goals and objectives to enable that vision. He / She will be able to combine their strategic acumen with their operating strength to ensure strategies and programs are grounded in a deep understanding of customer needs. This person provides clear direction, sets clear priorities, and allocates resources to the highest value opportunities. Further, they understand how to optimize decision making and track / measure success to maximize value and drive revenue.
