Vancouver Public Schools CTE Horticulture Teacher in Vancouver, Washington

Qualifications:

  • Valid Career and Technical Education Teacher Certificate for the state of Washington in Agricultural Education. Certification may be obtained through the possession of a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture or Agricultural Education, and one year of gainful employment in an agricultural specialty. Other requirements for certification may be obtained during the first two years of teaching.

  • Science endorsement a plus.

  • Willingness to implement the district’s Science Essential Learnings and a commitment to enact the Basic Skills Initiative to the fullest extent.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the principles and methods of effective instruction and understanding of State content standards

  • Ability to integrate science with natural resources and conservation curriculum.

  • Ability to teach to a variety of developmental levels, grades 9-12.

  • Experience working in collaborative groups

  • Must be able to infuse contextual learning opportunities into subject area

  • Ability to work cooperatively with students and their parents who are culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse

  • Advanced ability to use technology as an effective communication, planning and instructional tool

  • Willingness to participate in professional development courses aligned with the school and district initiatives

    Essential Functions:

  • Must adhere to the Career Education and Technical program standards set by the Superintendent of Public Instruction for vocational education inWashingtonState. Standards include:

  • Ability to teach biological sciences as it relates to the natural environment and its conservation. Must be able to infuse contextual learning opportunities into subject area.Ability to work and plan cooperatively with other teachers, administrators, counselors, and community members.

  • Must adhere to the program standards set by the Superintendent of Public Instruction for Career and

  • Technical Education (CTE) in Washington State. Standards include:

  • Advisor of FFA

  • CTE Advisory Committee participation

  • Attendance at state sponsored in service programs.

  • Greenhouse and environment systems

  • Propagation system

  • Hydroponics system

  • Irrigation system

  • Skills in propagation, growing, and managing houseplants and floral species.

  • Knowledge of business practices relating to the floral industry.

  • Ability to maintain mechanical systems (Greenhouse, hydroponics, etc).

  • Ability to provide an instructional program to meet individual student needs at their instructional level.

  • Willingness and interest in expanding the current natural resources and conservation program into an applied biology science and /or environmental science by working with science teachers.

  • Must be able to quickly learn and infuse emerging technologies into teaching, learning, and assessment.

  • Ability to maintain and operate a facility which includes:

  • Skills in growing food crops utilizing traditional and organic methods.

  • Knowledge of business practices relating to the Horticulture/Natural Resources industry.

  • A willingness to coordinate facility maintenance during off duty time.

  • Must have the ability to maintain effective classroom management in a non-coercive, positive environment.

  • Actively engage students in using technology in individual and collaborative learning activities

  • Works in a flexible and cooperative manner

  • Treats co-workers, supervisors, students, parents, and others with dignity and respect at all times

  • Serves as a positive role model for students, and practices the behaviors that are expected of our students

  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance and hours of operation as set by the assigned building/location and the comprehensive Professional Agreement to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements

  • Supervision of students

  • Other duties as assigned

Benefits/Compensation:

  • Salary range: $60,681 - $114,376 (includes Base & TRI enrichment; commensurate upon FTE, degree, credits and experience). Salary schedules can be accessed here (https://vansd.org/salary-schedules/) .

  • Additional Compensation: Certificated positions may have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary range such as, but not limited to TRI professional learning, extended year days, extra appendix E supplemental days and professional development reimbursement.   • Sick Leave: 8 hours per month (part-time employee accrual will be proportionate to their FTE).
