Part time and full time available

Must possess braille certification demonstrating competency with Unified English Braille (UEB) by successful completion of the Braille Competency Test developed by the Washington State School for the Blind; or the National Certification in Unified English Braille exam administered by National Blindness Professional Certification Board; or the Library of Congress Certificate in literary Braille transcribing.

Under the supervision of the program instructor(s) and/or the program administrator, the Braille Instructional Assistant will support the instruction and all other activities by Brailling materials for tutoring blind and visually impaired students on an individual and/or group basis. The Braille Instructional Assistant will enable students to develop competencies and skills to function in a successful and positive manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates effective communication though verbal and written instruction

  • Transcribes written material accurately into literary Braille, tactile, and large print material

  • Tutors students in correct Braille usage, provides one-to-one and group instruction to students

  • Relays technical needs for the blind and visually impaired to program instructor(s) and/or program administrator needed for the student to succeed

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining a learning environment essential to the Learning goals and curriculum outcomes designed by the program instructor

  • Assists in evaluating and specifying the direction of instruction to Amergisize the student's learning potential

  • Accurately maintains and relays data on student progress as applicable

  • Follows behavioral management strategies and techniques identified by the program instructor

  • Assists in organizing and preparing instructional materials

  • Attends various trainings necessary to understand current evidenced-based guidelines and trending issues relating to the visually impaired as required by state or contract

  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, and parents

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certification as a Literary Braille Transcriber or Proofreader is preferred

  • Minimum six months of experience performing basic Braille transcription; OR satisfactory completion of a course in braille transcription from the National Federation of the Blind

  • Must be able use computer notation and other electronic equipment used by the blind and visually impaired

  • Must have knowledge and skill related to embossing tools, media, and understand the concepts to be presented when preparing tactile materials

  • Must be flexible, cooperative, and be able to maintain HIPPA

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice

  • Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency program when applicable

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site

  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements

  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required

  • Computer proficiency required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
