The Opportunity: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a talented individual to fill the role of Sign Fabricator located in Union Gap, Washington. This position is on the sign fabrication crew manufacturing highway signs for WSDOT, WSF, Aviation, Washington State Parks, counties, cities, and other agencies. This position performs journey level work and ensures that signs are consistently manufactured to design standards in order to improve safety. To learn more, please watch the following video: Why WSDOT? The Sign Fabricator performs the following work: Prepare, clean, cut, and remove burs from aluminum with shear and die grinder. Apply reflective sheeting to aluminum. Design sign layouts using the WSDOT Sign Fabrication Manual and MUTCD standards. Weed, transfer, and apply vinyl to signs and roll on sign facing. Operate specialized sign fabrication equipment, silk screening equipment, warehouse, and shipping equipment. Keep daily records of material usage for inventory control. Ship signs to customers using commercial carriers within WSDOT guidelines. Conduct routine preventative maintenance on equipment as needed. Perform other tasks in accordance with safety programs, policies, and directives. Participate in safety meetings and trainings. Perform other duties as assigned. An ideal candidate for this position shall have the following: High School Diploma or GED. Two (2) Years Highway Maintenance or Metal Sign Fabrication Experience. An ideal candidate for this position shall have the ability to: Work at heights up to 15 feet. Stand for long periods of time ( 10 hour shifts with required breaks ). Lift and manipulate up to 50 pounds of various materials. Distinguish colors to make the appropriate signage. Operate specialized sign fabrication equipment, silk screening equipment, warehouse, and shipping equipment. Preferred education, skills, and experience include the following: Knowledge of MUTCD as it relates to sign fabrication and the WSDOT Sign Fabrication Manual. Certification to operate a forklift. Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
