Washington State Transportation Technician 3 (In-Training) Bituminous Materials Lab in Tumwater, Washington

Description About WSDOT Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is the steward of an integrated, multimodal transportation system that helps to ensure people and goods move safely and efficiently throughout the state. The Opportunity The WSDOT State Materials Laboratory Bituminous Materials Section is currently seeking a Transportation Technician 3 (In-Training) to join their team. This position will be part of a team working in the Bituminous Mixtures Laboratory conducting various AASHTO, ASTM and WSDOT test procedures to determine quality and acceptability of materials for use on highway construction projects. The future incumbent will perform semi-skilled to complex technical testing within the standards, specifications, and procedures. Additionally, they will be responsible for entering samples and test data into the MATS reporting database and present test results to project offices. To be successful in this position, we are looking for an individual who can work independently but also in a team environment. Note: This position includes an approved in-training plan; therefore, it may be filled at the Transportation Technician 1, 2 or 3 level. The salaries for these classifications are as follows: Transportation Technician 1: $39,528 - $52,776 annually depending on qualifications. Transportation Technician 2: $48,996 - $65,928 annually depending on qualifications. Transportation Technician 3: $55,524 - $74,604 annually depending on qualifications. What to Expect Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Transportation Technician will: * Perform testing and applies engineering computations for volumetric analysis for HMA and other specialized mix designs. * Perform testing and computations for mix design verification samples from state and local agency projects. * Record and reduce raw data. Prepare and enter data into a computer. * Assist the Bituminous Testing Engineer in performing calibration and verification of test equipment used in the Bituminous Mixtures Laboratory. * Assist the Bituminous Testing Engineer in testing of AASHTO Materials Reference Laboratory (AMRL) proficiency samples and testing for AMRL on-site assessments. * Ability to maintain and calibrate basic testing equipment; assist in maintenance chores and laboratory clean-up. * Work with materials exceeding 325 degrees Fahrenheit. * Stand for long periods of time. * Effectively communicate in written and verbal form with diverse audiences. * Possess a current driver's license and have the ability to travel statewide. Qualifications An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 1 position will have: * Graduation from high school or GED equivalent * Possess a current driver's license and have the ability to travel statewide. An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 2 position will have: * An Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting or other closely related fields. OR * Completion of an accredited vocational/technical program consisting of at least 1,200 instructional hours in Civil Engineering Technology, surveying, drafting, structural detailing, engineering design or other closely related fields. OR * Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 1 or equivalent. (College level or vocational/technical course work in engineering, drafting, survey, mathematics, or other closely related fields will substitute for the required technical engineering experience on a year-for-year basis.) OR * Three (3) years of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker, one (1) year of which must be as a Highway Maintenance Worker 2. * Possess a current driver's license and have the ability to travel statewide. An ideal candidate for the Transportation Technician 3 position will have: * Two (2) years of experience performing basic technical engineering work as a Transportation Technician 2 or equivalent. OR * A Bachelor's degree in Engineering. OR * Certification as an Engineer-in Training. * Possess a current driver's license and have the ability to travel statewide.
