The Department of Labor & Industries (L&I), Crime Victims Compensation Program (CVCP) is seeking candidates for an exciting opportunity as a Subrogation Specialist (Program Specialist 4).

In this position, you will analyze crime victim's tort claims, perform legal research and analysis, represent the Crime Victims Compensation Program at mediations, collaboratively negotiate final settlements, and perform collections on behalf of the CVCP.

You are detail oriented and have experience interpreting and applying laws, rules and policies to inform your decisions.

You demonstrate critical thinking, and have a good grasp of negotiating insurance settlements, personal injury and first/third party claims.

You are able to communicate with a wide range of groups and individuals clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. 

You have the ability to comprehend and explain complex processes in a way that makes them easy to understand.

You have highly developed interpersonal skills, are approachable, listen and authentically connect with individuals who have varying perspectives and priorities.

Duties

Some of what you will do:

  • Review and investigate potential liable parties if and when benefits are paid on claims.
  • Request and process settlement documents related to first, third party and/or civil recovery from the attorney or insurer.  Review the settlement release to ensure CVCP's right to restitution is not comprised.
  • Request and process settlement documents from insurance companies when the victims are not attorney represented.
  • Perform legal research; interpret RCW 7.68, case law, legal opinions and court rules supporting CVCP's right to recovery.
  • Administer math calculations and formulas to determine amount of settlements and distribution.
  • Compile draft recovery worksheet of the settlement distribution and initiate discussion with involved legal counsel on how to settle the Department's lien.
  • Represent CVCP's recovery interest in mediations and settlement conferences.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with external customers and provide technical assistance.
  • Review police reports and other claim information for potential auto, life, or other insurance related to the crime injury.
  • Oversee and monitor claims with pending settlements from insurance or lawsuits for financial recovery.  Request restitution from criminal offenders; if needed, perform collections on delinquent accounts.
  • Assist in developing and establishing policies and procedures for all aspects of recovery.

Qualifications

Required:
