We're searching for a skilled and proactive Community and Economic Development Director to drive our department's diverse functions, from economic development to code enforcement. This key role demands a hands-on approach and a deep commitment to community engagement in our dynamic small-city environment. Key Responsibilities: • Department Leadership: Oversee daily operations, manage budgets, and optimize resource use to ensure effective department functioning. • Permit & Code Enforcement: Direct the issuance of permits, conduct inspections, and enforce compliance with building codes and city ordinances. • Community Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with local businesses, residents, and organizations to promote collaboration and address community needs. • Economic Development: Lead initiatives to attract and retain businesses, coordinate with city council and advisory committees to drive growth. • Planning & Strategy: Develop long-term strategies to support sustainable community development and align with city council goals. • Technical Expertise: Stay current with building codes, interpret regulations, and implement necessary revisions. • Staff Management: Supervise, mentor, and motivate department staff, ensuring effective performance and resolving issues. • Public Relations: Handle sensitive inquiries, manage public complaints, and represent the city in legal matters and advisory roles. • Grant & Resource Management: Identify and manage grants, allocate resources efficiently to support city projects. Qualifications: • Knowledge: Extensive understanding of building codes, construction practices, and relevant regulations. • Skills: Strong organizational and interpersonal abilities, effective communication, and project management. • Experience: Four years of relevant coursework and three years of progressive experience in planning or building code roles, including two years in a supervisory position. • Certifications: ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Plans Examiner required; ICC Building Official Certification to be obtained within one year. Job Conditions: • May require after-hours work, including evening meetings and physical site inspections. • Requires a valid Washington State driver's license and the ability to lift up to fifty pounds.
