The Role: The Maintenance Mechanic 2 performs asbestos abatement and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, remodeling and construction of buildings, mechanical facilities, and equipment both individually and with other Facilities Maintenance staff as needed. Incumbents work independently and utilize a general knowledge of several related skill fields such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting. The duties, specific tasks or combinations of tasks are performed professionally and efficiently, incorporating both personal integrity and mutual respect. Job Duties Perform asbestos abatement and general remodeling and construction. Work may include but not limited to: - Remove asbestos from ceiling, walls, beams, boilers, and other structures following hazardous waste guidelines: assemble scaffolding and seal off work area using plastic sheeting and duct tape. - Positions mobile decontamination unit or portable showers at entrance of work areas. - Build connecting walkway between mobile unit or portable showers and work area using hand tools, lumber, fasteners, plastic sheeting, and duct tape. - Position portable air evacuation and filtration system inside or outside work area. - Spray chemical solution over asbestos covered surfaces using direct pump sprayers to soften and wet fibers. - Remove asbestos from surfaces using hand tools. - Shovel asbestos containing materials into plastic bags, spray with water, ensure all bags are sealed properly. -Clean work areas using HEPA vacuum and wet rags. -Dismantle scaffolding and temporary walkways using small hand tools and dispose of all contaminated materials. - Take any asbestos waste bags to designated site and or hazardous waste landfill. - Perform glove bags on a
