Position Description

The City of Tacoma, Building Review Group located in the Site and Building Division of the Planning and Development Services Department (PDS), is recruiting for the appointive position of Professional Engineer. PDS is seeking an engineer with a structural background, who is highly motivated and interested in diverse and challenging projects to join a dynamic team of professionals.

Position Details:

This Professional Engineer's responsibilities will include plan review of building permits for new buildings and structures, additions and remodels, and alterations. Plan review may also include the review of complex mechanical and plumbing systems, fire and life safety and building and site accessibility. As a representative of the Building Review Group, the Professional Engineer in this position will meet with potential developers and owners to discuss their projects and provide input and interpretation on designs and compliance with Washington State and City of Tacoma building codes and standards. This position will review construction permit document submittals and provide comments regarding code deficiencies, advise project proponents regarding code requirements at early stages of project planning, and assist contractors, developers, and inspectors regarding code compliant construction. This will include a variety of project types including new commercial buildings and tenant improvements for commercial structures, restaurants, offices, retail, and other multifamily and commercial uses.

The position will require a strong ability to communicate technical information related to building codes and construction with both professionals and non-professionals involved in permitting. Also, the Professional Engineer will be required to identify alternatives in a collaborative manner while working under tight deadlines and shall possess strong problem-solving skills. High performers in this position have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and use empathy and compassion to provide excellent customer service.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This is a professional environment with most activities occurring in an office setting with periodic field visits to active construction sites.

  • Field work consists of in-the-field collaboration with private contractors and City Inspectors.

  • Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking or climbing for long periods of time.

Bachelor of Science Degree in civil or mechanical engineering, or a related field from an accredited four (4) year college or university,


A Professional Engineering License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.


Candidates with experience in one or more of the following aspects of building design and construction are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Understanding of complex structural analysis and construction for various types of commercial buildings

Current Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment.

Knowledge & Skills


Develop methods of data collection and results interpretation. As necessary, implement results of research studies or programs with an appropriate and effective course of action based upon outcome or findings as it applies to assigned duties.


Prepare and present effective oral and written communications for professional and general public use.


Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with co-workers, the general public, city, county, state and federal agencies while coordinating research in support of assigned department programs. Establish, coordinate and direct work teams to accomplish assigned tasks to a successful completion.


Plan and organize work to meet schedules and objectives. Remain abreast of the latest management methods and techniques.


Remain current on applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures within engineering field assigned.


Proficient in engineering practices and principles within field of expertise.
