Position Description

Tacoma Power's Transmission and Distribution section is seeking a Power Systems Engineer in the classification of Associate Power Systems Engineer or Associate Power Systems Engineer, Senior to perform engineering duties in the preparation, implementation, coordination, evaluation and analysis of engineering projects, studies, systems, and functions. This position requires technical expertise within the field of electrical engineering and project management.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Respond to customer needs as a First Point of Contact for all customers seeking information for installation of new and alterations to existing electrical services. Review Accela Tasks to coordinate with City permitted projects and actions.

  • Analyze new or existing electrical loads for our commercial, residential customers to determine if additional electrical infrastructure is required.

  • Develop and communicate construction costs to our customer base, using customer service policy and handbook as a guide to ensure compliance to Tacoma Power Utilities Construction Standards and all established laws and codes; Washington Administrative Code (WAC), National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.

  • Develop design drawings for the installation of utility infrastructure and coordinate design with drafting department and field personnel for all large residential plats, commercial and industrial projects to ensure the layout and placement of electrical facilities are in compliance of all applicable codes, construction standards, and secured easement corridors for placement of Tacoma Powers electrical infrastructure. This includes electrical design, high voltage equipment components, and materials for primary and secondary conductors to the lot corners or point of delivery

  • Consults with customers, contractors, developers, builders, and other governing agencies during all phases of the construction process from project inception to project completion.

  • Develop all working documents for New Electrical Service Construction including work order packets for line crews, and design drawings using computer programs.


Associate Power Systems Engineer Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc)

  • 0-1 year of engineering experience in a power utility

    Senior Power Systems Engineer Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or directly related field (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Etc)

  • 2 years of engineering experience in a power utility

    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements

    Must complete Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) within 6 months of hire and maintain thereafter.

    Washington State Driver's License

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
