Pacific Lutheran University Maintenance Electrician in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

FT; Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm. May be "on-call" for emergency repairs during off-hours. Some overtime is required, and vacation approval may be limited during peak activity periods.

General Description:

The Maintenance Electrician is responsible for the repair, maintenance and operation of all electrical systems for buildings on campus, including lighting and other electrical equipment. This position reports to the Maintenance Lead.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and repair split-phase, capacitor, repulsion and polyphase motors, alternating current motor controls, direct current motor control universal, shaded pole and fan motors, also synchronous motors and synchronous electronic control or motors using solid state motor control.
  • Repair or replace relays, thermostats, contactors, motor control and protection devices, pressure, single pole, three way, four way momentary switches and low voltage switches.
  • Maintain and repair space heaters, water heaters, clocks, fans, blowers and drainage pumps.
  • Incorporate current buildings and operational code requirements in performing work.
  • Monitor work or inspections of electrical systems by contractors or outside agencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Proficient with volt testers, amp meters, volt ohmmeters, volt and amp recorders and thermocouples, and mega ohmmeters.

Required Qualifications:

  • General journey level electrician (EL01) with one year of experience at this level.
  • High school diploma or  GED.
  • Valid driver's license (Must have had a valid driver's license for at least 2 years).
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background check, declaration regarding sexual misconduct with references (subject to verification), driving abstract, and pass PLU's Driver's Certification Training.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified general master electrician.

Work Conditions:

  • Some working outside, working outside regular schedule, occasional working in hot boiler rooms, and working from different types of high lifts and ladders.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required to stand and walk, and may occasionally be required to climb, balance, or work in cramped areas. Must be able to bend and reach, stoop, and kneel while working in a variety of areas.
  • Requires good physical strength. Must be able to regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Good hearing and vison.
