Foss Maritime Line Superintendent, Seasonal in Tacoma, Washington

Responsible for directing and managing Longshore labor to efficiently expedite the handling of the ship's mooring lines during docking/undocking. Responsible for coordination between the pilots, tugs, terminals, agents, dispatch and longshoremen. Responsible for reviewing line handlers payroll each week and submit as required. Attends port safety meetings and instructs line handlers on various safety standards. Ensures safety deficiencies are reported/followed up on via the terminal and port. This is a seasonal, full-time position based in Seattle, WA that will continue through cruise ship season with an anticipated conclusion on or before October 31, 2025. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: * Supervise and plan in advance activities prior to the ship coming into port. * Check berth conditions for docking, work areas for safe operation of Longshore line handlers, and that all labor has been assembled for adequate and efficient operations. * Ensures proper spotting of the vessel on arrival. * Instruct line handlers are working safely and have a safe work environment in which to work. * Provide close supervision to line handlers, providing regular feedback. * Communicates with pilots, tugs and linemen to ensure accuracy and safety. * Report problems and issues to the appropriate Manager, as needed, especially issues of complexity or great impact on the operation. Safety * Maintains safety program and equipment. * Responsible for PPE inventory and distribution to the line handlers. * Holds monthly safety meetings with longshoremen. * Attends monthly safety meetings at PMA to discuss and act upon safety issues. * Tracks each linehandler's safety record and hold semi-annual awards meeting with line handlers. General Operations * Double checks vessel arrival/departure time for accuracy. * Gathers useful information via terminals, longshoremen, agents, marine exchange, etc. to facilitate better customer service. * Insures valuable information is forwarded to all parties concerned in a timely manner. * Ensures command of all longshore issues at all times. * Advise senior or executive management of any operational issues that would impact production * Updates on a daily, weekly and monthly basis statistical data for all line handling jobs in the local area regardless of the company involved. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Dispatching procedures. * Labor laws, marine and safety codes and the ILWU contract. * Terminal operations and how they affect the arrival/departure of vessels. * General knowledge of terminal equipment such as cranes, hostlers and winches. * Safety skills and the ability to recognize a safe and unsafe work environment. * Excellent oral and presentation communication skills. * Must have the ability to lead by example, adapt to changing circumstances, communicate effectively, build strong teams, make sound decisions, resolve problems and develop rapport with Longshore Labor Director. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: This position generally requires a high school diploma and at least three years of maritime/operations experience. Must possess a valid driver's license. Must possess valid TWIC issued by Homeland Security. Working Conditions: Work is performed in environments ranging from outside to inside, noisy to quiet, hot to cold, and wet to dry as well as in normal office environments. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement. Work is on an as needed basis. Must be able to work in rotating shifts, days, evenings, nights, holidays and weekends as needed.
