Job Summary:

This job is responsible for verifying the patient’s insurance information prior to scheduled visits in accordance with HIPAA guidelines, internal standards and procedures, and other regulatory requirements. An incumbent interprets coverage limitations, patient vs. insurance coverage, follows up with payors/patients to secure account and responds to insurance verification questions.

Work includes: 1) verifying insurance coverage and patient balances via electronic tools and payor websites; 2) collecting, recording and distributing patient demographic and financial information via computer and manual systems; and 3) conveying patient liability estimates and collecting for services.

Work requires knowledge of insurance authorization/billing and privacy/confidentiality practices, as well as knowledge of medical terminology and insurance payor (specifically Medicaid) requirements. An incumbent follows proper channels of communication in handling routine problems and recognizing issues that need escalation to management. Strong customer service skills and the ability to produce work with a high degree of accuracy/timeliness while meeting productivity standards are also required.

The job exists in central locations, and while there may be minor differences in job content, they are not significant for classification purposes. Overall, the nature of the work and job requirements are consistent between locations.

Essential Duties:

Collects/receives patient demographic and financial information via phone, mail and/or Internet; verifies insurance information and records into electronic medical record.

Reviews eligibility discrepancies; gathers/resubmits follow up information as appropriate and alerts appropriate staff of any required appointment changes.

Responds to general questions from patients, staff and others regarding insurance coverage and authorizations.

Collects on balances for services in an accurate and timely manner using established processes and procedures.

Responds to verbal and written requests for patient financial information in compliance with HIPAA regulations; investigates concerns/issues and provides quality assurance of data; may refer customers to appropriate resources.

Performs end-of-day payment reconciliation; closes out cash drawers; ensures that outstanding work is completed or assigned to other staff.

Education/Work Experience:

One year of experience in a medical office or healthcare environment where knowledge of medical terminology, insurance companies and codes as well as policies and procedures was necessary to perform the job.
