Job Summary

This is a developmental opportunity for active-duty military personnel who will be separating from the military in the next 3-6 months. The SkillBridge Internship Program is designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in the civilian sector to SkillBridge applicants. SkillBridge is a Department of Defense (DOD) program that matches civilian opportunities to a military member’s job training and work experience at the end of their military duty. This position will be located in the Spokane County Civil Service department and incumbents will perform various technical and/or clerical duties, using various computer programs and/or operating technical equipment. Incumbent will engage in various work assignments, projects, and activities of varying complexity, structured so the participant has an opportunity to apply principles and theories, explore a career path and gain the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform at a professional level. Participants receive training, supervision, and mentorship by a professional within the Spokane County Civil Service department. Positions in this classification provide entry-level to intermediate-level professional administrative services, under supervision of the Civil Service Chief Examiner and/or department personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the Civil Service department. Incumbent will assist clerical support personnel in an office and will be trained to relieve administrative superiors of routine office or technical responsibilities. Positions in this classification may work as part of a team; incumbents must have the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships. Work is subject to cross-checking and/or general review.

Examples of Duties

Incumbent may not be required to perform all job functions and may be required to perform additional, position specific tasks.

Maintain confidentiality of all information in Civil Service records, testing databases, and files; create, update, and assist with maintenance of all specialized records and files.

Undertake and/or participate in projects and programs designed to develop professional skills and expertise, appropriate to the needs of the department.

Assist with and participate in the planning and implementation of Civil Service projects and initiatives.

Receive guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.

Conduct original research and prepare reports based on findings, to include recommendations or alternative proposals for action, as appropriate to the position and as specified by the Chief Examiner and in accordance with the Revised Code of Washington (RCW) and Civil Service Rules and Regulations.

May undertake related studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the department.

Check the main Civil Service voicemail and forward voice messages, as appropriate.

Use various computer programs; record, search, print, correct, and assist with designing spreadsheets and programs; create new forms and/or files as needed.

Collect and route employee/department incoming mail.

Assist with planning, coordination, and logistics for meetings and other events.

Help with responding to written, electronic, and telephone inquiries from internal and external customers, and either direct inquiries to the appropriate personnel or provide proper resolution to inquiries.

May assist with maintenance of computer-based administrative records, testing material, training records, personnel files, and instructional records; draft reports as requested.

Assist Civil Service personnel with the implementation and maintenance of new software programs for training and records.

Assist with the creation and maintenance of relevant recruiting materials and compiling job/career fair/community event handouts and distribution materials, as needed

Attend recruiting, department, and/or community events, as needed.

Assist with and help proctor written, practical, and physical ability examinations, as needed.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Must be a citizen of the United States or lawful permanent resident who can read and write the English language; high school diploma or GED.

A valid driver’s license is required at the time of application and must be retained throughout employment.

Incumbent is required to undergo and successfully complete a full background investigation with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office’s Background Investigation Unit prior to being placed/assigned in the Spokane County Civil Service department.

WORKING CONDITIONS: (incumbents may be required to do the following):

  • stand or sit for extended periods of time

  • lift and carry supplies weighing 10 to 20 lbs.

  • may need to lift up to 50 lbs., on occasion

  • bend, twist, and reach to stock shelves and cabinets

  • requires good shoulder flexibility and finger dexterity

  • environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate
