THE ROLE The Director Nursing has direct overall responsibility for the operation of nursing services across multiple units. The Director Nursing implements the hospital's mission, philosophies, goals, standards, policies, and procedures. Administrative responsibilities include planning, budgeting, staffing, and managing and evaluating direct reports. The Director assures that the provision of nursing services is integrated and in support of the strategic plan with a focus on highly reliable care, performance improvement, throughput, capacity management and appropriate utilization of resources. Assumes an active leadership role inter-professionally and works collaboratively to ensure an integrated system for delivery of care. The Director uses critical thinking skills for effective problems solving and clinical decision making. Provides leadership and acts as a resource for the practice of nursing and customer relations. The Director has the authority and responsibility for administrative decisions and functions as an Administrator on call (AOC) on a rotating basis with other directors and executive leaders. This position will oversee: Medical/Oncology, Surgical/Orthopedic, Nursing Supervisors, Family Maternity Center, ICU, ER and Progressive Care Unit. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Creates a nursing climate that encourages teamwork, fosters mutual trust, and engages a high level of commitment to the purpose and values of the organization as well as facilitates and encourages caregiver involvement and collaborative relationships. Assesses the quality of care rendered and supports improvement activities to assure quality, timely, and appropriate clinical services are provided to all patients. Maintains patient care services policies and procedures, utilizing current evidence to update. Serves as an advocate for patients/families in regard to decisions for resolutions of ethical dilemmas. Develop and monitor financial improvement plans; assure targets are on track or completed. Participates in the negotiation and monitoring of contract agreement compliance with the Washington State Nurses Association, physicians, and service providers. Develops annual departmental budgets, which will include appropriate volume and revenue projections and reflect the most cost-effective means of delivering services to achieve outstanding quality. Prepares nursing capital equipment list and requests funding from Executive Leadership. Monitors Nursing department monthly operating review reports to assure that budgetary goals are met; significant deviations are adequately investigated, and appropriate action taken. <
