Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe Natural Resources III - Geoduck Monitor in Sequim, Washington
Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe (JST) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Natural Resources Technician III -- Geoduck Monitor (NRT-III-GM) to oversee compliance with State and Tribal regulations and ensure on-the-water safety during JST's geoduck fishery. This position plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and orderly fishery while also contributing to a variety of marine and riparian habitat and resource management projects during non-fishery periods. This is a technical position requiring a broad range of skills in natural resource management, boat operation, and data collection.
Geoduck Monitor Duties:
- Monitor the geoduck fishery, ensuring divers and boat owners adhere to all State and Tribal regulations.
- Verify diver identification and eligibility.
- Track diver participation, recording the number of crates and dive time.
- Accurately weigh and record daily harvest amounts for each diver, assisting with JST Shellfish Program catch accounting.
- Ensure proper tagging of geoduck crates and provide harvest records to divers and the JST Shellfish Program.
- Maintain compliance with Washington Department of Health shellfish sanitation requirements.
- Prioritize diver safety, responding to emergencies (including communication with other watercraft, administering first aid/oxygen, and initiating emergency protocols).
- Complete and submit incident/accident reports to the JST Shellfish Program Manager and Dive Safety Officer.
- Coordinate weekly geoduck sampling with divers, the JST Shellfish Program, and other tribes.
- Maintain daily communication with divers regarding orders, buyers, and harvest coordination.
- Provide boat and equipment maintenance assistance, including tracking servicing/repairs and maintaining/replacing safety equipment.
- Maintain daily boat logs and operational records.
Natural Resource Technician III Field Operations Duties:
- Conduct field-based data collection, analysis, and reporting using scientific principles.
- Lead or assist with various field activities, including:
- Freshwater and marine habitat surveys
- Intertidal and subtidal shellfish population surveys
- Freshwater fish studies
- Water and sediment quality surveys
- Riparian, estuarine, and marine vegetation surveys
- Marine phytoplankton biotoxin studies
- Habitat and resource enhancement and restoration
- Shellfish and finfish harvest monitoring
- Maintain field equipment and supplies.
- Provide technical support (independent data collection, survey design/development, project planning, data analysis using statistical software, graphics, database management, and report writing).
- Participate as a technical advisor in relevant forums.
- Adhere to all JST policies and procedures, including safety and work practices as described in the Occupational Exposure Control Plan.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Three (3) years of relevant professional experience or advancing natural resources related employment.
- Experience and proficiency operating small boats (up to 30 feet) in variable conditions.
- Current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Exceptional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, ability to work independently, and ability to balance monitoring and project responsibilities.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned.
- Valid Washington Driver's License with proof of insurance.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation and drug screening.
