VMware xLabs Staff II Product Designer - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Seattle, Washington

Job Description

VMware’s Advanced Technology Group in the Office of the CTO is looking for a Staff II Product Designer to join the xLabs core team. xLabs is an internal incubation program that works with partners, customers, and VMware teams to identify cutting edge innovation opportunities 1-3 years ahead of the roadmap. We then work to design and build aligned products that can be exited into the business units and delivered to customers as new product. Our goal is to strategically invest to accelerate new technology delivery.


  • Work closely with product management, engineering architects, and program partners to develop new, cross-platform and cross-BU user centric designs, user stories, and user experiences that can then be communicated to a newly formed team and used to accelerate their success in delivering new projects.

  • Design and implement end-to-end user journeys for net new products and integrations

  • Work with multiple engineering and product stakeholders in different BUs with different platforms to put together a cohesive product design


  • 8-12 years Software Product Design or similar experience shipping enterprise software products to users

  • Experience with multiple backlog management tools including Jira, Gitlab, Github, and Confluence

  • You are highly competent in all areas of Product Design, from user research, experience, interaction, and visual design

  • Experience operating in a highly technical environment and translating complex design patterns into user-centered solutions

  • Experience in training, mentoring, and/or upskilling designers

  • Ability to expertly facilitate collaborative design activities in a workshop context

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills with a strong work ethic

  • A portfolio of design work that represents your design process

  • Familiarity with modern design tools such as Figma or Sketch

  • Ability to rapidly iterate on prototypes

  • Ability to articulate design direction and communicate the designs to Product Managers and Software Engineers

  • Consistently provides direct and impactful feedback in design reviews

  • Strong consensus and alignment building skills

  • Frequently engages designers in their own/adjacent product teams to help them grow their skills and design toolkit

  • Experience with SaaS and platform design and development

  • Experience with microservice, Kubernetes, and cloud native technologies

  • Flexible and willing to dive-in to new technologies and learn new skills

  • Good teamwork and communication skills

  • Experience designing for distributed platforms and applications, multi-cloud and consumption-driven user experiences
