The Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time 65% FTE Web Computing Specialist to design and maintain web sites for the Department of Pediatrics.
The Web Computing Specialist is the primary point of contact for unit departmental web needs. This position combines technical programming and back-end web-development skills with front-end information design, architecture, and technical writing. This position works closely with content providers to provide a website that meets the strategic needs of the unit.
This position is responsible for implementing, updating, and maintaining the Department of Pediatrics website. Hybrid position with two days per week on site minimum.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Website and Tool Building
Working collaboratively with internal stakeholders, explore and recommend approaches to meet project needs, then design, develop, and revise websites and web applications to meet the needs of our internal staff and of end users.
Identify, design, implement, and support new features and process improvements while prioritizing accessibility, usability, and content management best practices.
Integrate internal and third-party web tools and applications as needed.
Collaborate with department IT staff regarding server configuration, management, upgrades, and maintenance.
Troubleshoot and respond to bugs and issues, including patching of software.
Development experience with Drupal 7-10, including migration experience, site administration, theme building, twig templating, use of composer, module building, troubleshooting, and all necessary front-end and back-end development
Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues on the back-end of the department website as well as our lab and initiative websites.Staff and End User Support
Guide others in content generation, usability, and information architecture.
Respond to support requests from units and provide appropriate and timely solutions.
Advise departmental staff and faculty seeking support and direction in web development needs.
Provide training to departmental contributors on using our Drupal framework and following best practices for authoring web content.
Provide editorial review of content provided by colleagues.Validation and Testing
Conduct thorough testing of user interfaces across multiple platforms to ensure all designs render correctly and systems function properly.
Validate the technical feasibility of website designs, while also applying best practices in designing and testing for accessibility.
Verify that websites comply with current UW and national policies including security, privacy and accessibility.
Use google analytics to analyze and make decisions about content.
Analyze usability, accessibility, feasibility.
Provide reports to others about departmental site usage.
As a valued member of the Communications team, participate in high-level discussions about department website needs.
Purchase software as needed for website needs. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology
Two years of experience in User-centered development, interaction design, information design, and heuristic evaluation. Demonstrated expertise in building responsive and cross-platform compatible websites, applications, and database-backed tools using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, GIT on a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP). Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Experience with graphical design for the web, including familiarity with graphics software such as Photoshop.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to respond appropriately to deadline pressures.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with federally funded biomedical research projects.
Experience working in higher education and/or a large research institution.
Experience with University of Washington-provided tools and resources such as Mailman, WordPress, Shibboleth.
Knowledge of IT accessibility (WCAG 2.1, Level AA): familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations
Demonstrated expertise in organizing and writing content for the web, and ability to coach content editors
Development experience with Drupal 7-10, including migration experience, site administration, theme building, twig templating, use of composer, module building, troubleshooting, and all necessary front-end and back-end development
