The UW Botanic Gardens has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary UW Botanic Gardens Horticulture Intern to join their team!
Under the direct supervision of the Grounds Supervisor 1 and the direction and safety training of UW Botanic Gardens horticulture staff, perform skilled horticulture tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of UWBG plant collections, gardens and grounds.
Primary horticulture programs and tasks include:
• Plant collections maintenance and development • Plant health care • Arboriculture • Planting • New plant care and irrigation • Mapping and plant records
The 320 acres that make up the UWBG includes the 230-acre Washington Park Arboretum (WPA) and the 90-acre Center for Urban Horticulture (CUH).
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction and safety training of UW Botanic Gardens horticulture staff, perform skilled horticulture tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation and maintenance of UWBG plant collections, gardens and grounds, including:
• Weed management : hand, mechanical, may assist in herbicide application; • Soil management : cultivation, topdressing with organic mulches, may assist remediation of compacted and poorly drained soils; • Mulching : applying of wood chip mulch to landscape beds. • Fertilization : applying granular and liquid fertilizers. • Irrigation and New Plant Care : setup and operation of manual sprinklers and hand-watering of new and existing plant collections, may assist in irrigation repairs and scheduling controllers, introduction to MAXICOM and other new plant care duties; • Pruning : properly pruning plant collections and native flora; • Planting and transplanting : installation of container and balled and burlapped trees and shrubs, may assist BB transplanting of trees, and may plant seed and transplants for seasonal color; (limited planting during summer) • Plant Display Maintenance : sweeping, raking, mulching, edging, grooming, debris removal of display beds and containers; • Application of horticultural chemicals : application of herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides and other products as prescribed by UWBG plant health care specialist; • Brush clearing : removal of woody invasive or other unwanted plants, includes follow-up with invasive plant control techniques and site restoration; • Assist in large tree work : may provide ground support for tree pruning and removal and chipping of brush; • Hardscapes : may install and maintain interpretive signs, benches, fencing, rock work, trails and stairs; • Landscape renovation : site preparation including soil and plant installation, trail work, rock installation and the ability to interpret design drawings and details; • Use of manual tools and equipment : rakes, hand edger, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, weeding forks, hoes, pruning shears, weed wrenches and weed-torches, etc.; • Operate power and motorized equipment : Operator safety training will be provided before use! Examples include; weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, tillers, mowers, small trucks, utility vehicles, pesticide sprayers, tractors, skid-steer/back-hoe, brush chipper, stump-grinder, etc.; • Record Keeping & Mapping : training provided to submit plant condition, dead plant reports and maintain other horticulture records; and ability to use ArcMap software for mapping plant collections.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Physical ability to do required work.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Intern needs to commit to a 3-month appointment, working approx. 20 hours per week. • Must be currently enrolled in an academic institution offering credit for horticulture (or equivalent) internships AND institution provides general liability insurance and indemnification for use of power equipment and other higher risk tasks. Our local community college horticulture programs: South Seattle College, Edmonds College, and Lake Washington Institute of Technology, have these in place with UW. • Willingness to work outside in all kinds of weather.
