Underwriter

General Description

Responsible for underwriting, pricing and processing accounts in accordance with Distinguished Specialty?s underwriting standards, service standards, program guidelines and personal underwriting authority. This includes gathering necessary information from brokers, negotiating with carriers, preparing & delivering proposals and soliciting feedback/expectations from brokers.

Account Servicing

  • Creates quality referrals on account submissions to carriers based on established underwriting guidelines and service standards.

  • Reviews loss runs; understand how loss frequency & severity might have an impact on accounts and anticipates using that information in marketing strategy with carriers.

  • Identify account rounding opportunities four months in advance of the renewal date.

  • Respond to routine inquiries.

  • Manage and track ongoing service requests from broker including endorsements, requests for policy information, certificates of insurance and other data.

  • Binds insurance policies in applicable systems and issues binders to brokers.

  • Invoice accounts based on service standards or monitor their completion if done by RSP.

  • Maintain electronic files on each account in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Monitor designated reports to ensure adherence to company quality & service standards

  • Complete file audits

Documentation/Underwriting Standards

  • Meets all file documentation standards, complies with underwriting and authority level standards, and passes all audits (both internal and external).

  • Responsible for assisting in regular and periodic underwriting audits.

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of program forms and endorsements, and program rating methodology.

Relationship Manager

  • Responsible for monitoring production, hit ratios, renewal retention ratios, and other production and quality measures.

  • Identify new contacts within existing retail brokerages and strategize with Sales Executives to solicit business and relationships.

  • Build and maintain effective professional/personal relationships with brokers.

  • On occasion, contribute to presentations and sales calls, accompanied by Sales Executive.

  • Travel with Sales Executives 2-4 trips per year.

  • Ability to overcome obstacles / barriers to close sales with advice from Sales Executive.

  • Collect and report competitive data to assist in development and execution of our strategies.

  • Meet with existing and prospective markets as required.

Product Management

  • May be called upon to assist program manager(s) with product management tasks. Responsibilities may include:

  • Negotiation of product guidelines, authority and procedures with carrier(s)

  • Maintenance of product applications, workflows, operations and IT systems compliance

  • Communications about program policies and procedures with Sales and Underwriting staff;

  • Monitoring program profitability and proactively manage toward profitable results

  • Oversight the evaluation, classification, and rating of risk to determine acceptability, coverage, and pricing

  • Monitoring of critical areas, such as loss ratio, costs, retention ratio and new business hit ratio, formulating corrective action where necessary

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Technical:

  • Working knowledge of insurance coverage and contracts; ability to analyze forms and coverages

  • Working knowledge of market underwriting standards and procedures.

  • Demonstrated aptitude for computer based work management; ability to achieve expert skills in agency system software.

  • Ability to anticipate and solve problems creatively.

  • Demonstrates excellent organizational skills.

  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize amongst various immediate needs.

  • Is detail-oriented.

  • Demonstrates mathematical aptitude.

Behavioral:

  • Communication - Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Relationship Management - Ability to develop working relationships with both internal and external customers. High level of interpersonal skills to deal effectively with retailers, business owners, carrier representatives, and co-workers.

Physical:

  • Handles routine office work, drives to appointments, calls on customers and vendors in business settings, and completes air travel. Job requires data entry into computers, handling files, carrying a laptop computer.

Office:

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of phone systems and basic office machinery and equipment; Microsoft Office, ConceptOne, and other agency systems as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2 years of post-high school education or equivalent training.

  • 3 to 5 years progressive customer service and/or agency management experience within the insurance industry.

  • A valid Agent?s or Broker?s License per state requirements.

  • Must occasionally be willing to work evenings, holidays, and weekends to meet business needs.
