UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. UW-IT provides critical technology support to all three campuses, UW Medicine, and research operations around the world, partnering with the UW community to enable innovation, learning, discovery, and service." Data & Applications (D&A) is the division in UW-IT that runs the university’s academic and business systems, productivity platforms, enterprise integrations, learning analytics and data for decision-making and is also responsible for the accessibility of UW’s digital resources.

Data Integrations is the unit within D&A focused on data, especially UW Administrative data. The unit leads integrating data into the enterprise, amplifying the value of UW's data, and ultimately enabling customers and partner success. Data Integrations is currently seeking a Technology Manager to lead the Analysis & Design (A&D) team. The A&D team exists to design and support the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), the Enterprise Web Services (EWS), and other Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) services. The team is responsible for gathering and documenting requirements, developing conceptual data models, producing data mapping and lineage specifications, and prototyping data structure and analytics to meet business requirements. The team works with developers, data providers, and customers to deliver reliable data solutions in order to meet tactical and strategic institutional data needs.

The A&D Technology Manager is responsible for building strong working relationships with other units represented both within and beyond UW-IT; communicating issues in a timely and accurate manner to partners, customers, and colleagues; providing personnel and performance management of the A&D team; working with the other Enterprise Data Platform service teams to develop, maintain, and evolve best practices; and providing leadership for operations and strategic projects.

Position Complexities: The emphasis and focus of this position is on the "global view" of UW institutional data, the supporting data models & designs for this big-picture view, and translating this big-picture view into tangible work for the A&D team. The position is cross-cutting, requiring coordination and liaison to internal team roles as well as external groups to ensure data products are well-designed, robust, reliable, sustainable, and fit for purpose.

The Technology Manager is expected to collaborate easily and effectively with other Data Integration unit leaders, in particular architects and peer managers. This position is also outward facing to other UW-IT technical teams, UW administrative units, and academic units for the assessment of critical information needs, evangelism of existing offerings, and for the promotion of standards & best practices in data design and modeling.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Informatics, Information Systems, Information Management, Library Sciences, or related field OR equivalent experience

  • Minimum of four or more years’ experience performing progressively more complex and responsible tasks involving data design, technical management, or operations management in information management environments

  • Experience successfully leading teams or projects with Agile methodologies

  • Experience managing, leading and developing staff, including providing day-to-day supervision

  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.

  • Demonstrated advanced project management soft skills, including tolerance for ambiguity, ability to earn the trust of stakeholders, ability to motivate team members, tenacious problem ownership, the ability to deliver bad news gracefully, and a dedication to customer advocacy

  • Ability to prioritize short term versus long term solutions while managing technical or design debt

  • Experience in designing or implementing data management solutions (i.e. data quality, data security and privacy, business intelligence, data warehousing, master data management, reference data management or meta-data management solutions.)

  • Demonstrated ability to oversee, plan, lead, and coordinate the activities of senior analysts and architects, cross-functional project teams, and other staff working on complex data products and projects.

  • Experience with data warehouse industry standards, patterns, and practices

  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies and skills is essential; Strong problem-solving skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with minimal supervision DESIRED:

  • Experience in a major research university setting.

  • Knowledge and experience with multiple business subject areas, i.e., HR, Payroll, Financial, Purchasing, Research Administration, Academics, etc.

  • Exposure to enterprise data governance

  • Familiarity with RESTful web service concepts and use as a data source

  • Demonstrated knowledge working experience with SQL Server and T-SQL

  • Awareness of industry trends in areas such as business intelligence, data visualization, APIs, data lakes, analytic tools
