Sustainability Science and Innovation is a multi-disciplinary team within the WW Sustainability organization that combines science, analytics, economics, statistics, machine learning, product development, and engineering expertise to identify, evaluate and/or develop new science, technologies, and innovations that aim to address long-term sustainability challenges.

We are seeking a creative and analytical Materials Engineer to join our Sustainability Science and Innovation team. In this role, you'll help shape the future of Amazon's products, packaging, and building materials through a combination of hands-on development, vendor collaboration, and novel computational approaches.

As a Sustainable Materials Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of developing and validating novel materials solutions that drive sustainability and circularity, enhance customer experience, and optimize our operations. You'll leverage both traditional materials science expertise and emerging technologies, including AI/ML tools, to accelerate materials development and testing. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you'll identify opportunities for materials innovation across Amazon's businesses.

Key job responsibilities

  • Drive materials innovation projects from concept to implementation, utilizing both experimental and computational approaches

  • Lead the evaluation and qualification of next-generation sustainable materials for packaging, building materials, and Amazon products

  • Partner with vendors and academic institutions to co-develop novel materials solutions

  • Apply advanced analytics and AI/ML tools to accelerate materials development and testing

  • Develop and maintain technical standards for materials qualification across multiple product categories

  • Present technical findings and recommendations to senior leadership and stakeholders through written and verbal communications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field, or 3+ years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated experience in materials development, characterization, and qualification

  • Experience with computational materials science tools and AI/ML applications

  • Strong analytical skills with experience in data analysis and statistical methods

  • Proficiency with materials testing methodologies and relevant standards (ASTM/ISO)

  • Experience with mechanical testing equipment and data analysis tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with analytical tools (e.g., electron microscope, X-ray inspection, infrared spectroscopy, gas and liquid chromatography)

  • Passion for sustainability

  • Experience in polymer-based materials and/or product packaging

  • Highly detail oriented, organized with experience in 5S programs

  • Insists on the highest standards for quality and repeatability in testing

  • Self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $86,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
