Position Summary

We are seeking an interested graduate student to join the Translational Data Science (TDS) team in Informatics and Predictive Sciences for a 10-week summer internship program. As an intern, you will work closely with your mentor and the Cell Therapy Correlative Research Team (CT-CRT) to develop methods for automating the harmonization of translational data from multiple CAR-T clinical trials.

A core task of the TDS team is to develop reproducible and reusable harmonized data sets with our translational scientist stakeholders. Data harmonization is the process of combining multiple heterogenous data sets together into a single unified format that is suitable for combined analysis. Harmonization is a time-consuming and manual process that we are working to automate as much as possible. You will work with BMS-internal LLM-enabled data analysis tools to contribute to an automated workflow for data harmonization in R. In this project, you'll gain experience with actual clinical patient data, professional methods of collaboration, and industry-standard data science tools. Your work will leave a lasting impact on the data workflows used by the CT-CRT and TDS team going forward.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the automation of the key steps of the data harmonization process:

  • Identify compatible data columns between data from different studies.

  • Develop data wrangling code to harmonize the content of data for compatibility across studies.

  • Perform data quality checks that flag parts of the data that need human intervention to achieve analysis-ready data.

  • Integrate the data wrangling steps from an LLM-enabled tool into data harmonization code for reproducibility and further modification.

  • Add data from an additional study to an existing data set of harmonized cell therapy clinical trials.

  • Gather requirements for harmonized data from key stakeholders.

  • Develop harmonization and data wrangling code in R while using a cloud environment and best practices for reproducibility and data quality.

  • Work with BMS-internal LLM tools to develop prompts and processes for automating the key steps of data harmonization.

  • Present the results of the internship project to an audience of professional scientists.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Some experience with R, and experience data wrangling (filter, join, reshape data, etc. ) in any coding language.

  • Experience working with biomedical or clinical patient data.

  • Experience with making your code reproducible or sharing it for others to use, preferably using version control ( e.g. git & GitHub).

  • Experience coding in a cloud or remote workspace ( e.g. remote login to a server, Posit Cloud, Google Collab, EC2 instances, etc. ) is a plus.

  • Experience harmonizing data from different sources for combined analysis is a plus.

  • Ability to communicate clearly about project goals and results.

  • Currently enrolled in an MS/PhD program in a biomedical or data-driven field.

  • Able to work full time for the duration of the 10-week program.

The starting compensation for this job is a range from $29.00/hour - $35.00/hour. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills and the geographic location where work is performed. Final individual compensation is decided commensurate with demonstrated experience and education level.

If you come across a role that intrigues you but doesn't perfectly line up with your resume, we encourage you to apply anyway. You could be one step away from work that will transform your life and career.
