The Upward Bound Study Skills Instructor teaches, tutors, and mentors program participants (high school students who are low income and/or potential first generation-to-college students) in mathematics. This includes one-on-one, small group, and whole class settings; prepares students for SAT and ACT exams and tracks outcomes; conducts academic assessments; documents student participation and progress; participates in the planning and implementation of program activities; establishes and maintains collaborative professional relationships with school staff; and attends meetings as required. The Study Skills Instructor contributes to the overall success of the program by performing duties and responsibilities as assigned. The Study Skills Instructor reports to the Upward Bound Director.

The position requires knowledge and experience teaching, mentoring, and motivating low-income high school students across a wide of math topics from basic math through advanced calculus. The position requires competencies in teaching students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and/or disabled backgrounds. The Study Skills Instructor will interact with multiple stakeholders including high school staff and administration, postsecondary staff and faculty, and staff from community-based organizations.

The position contributes to OMA&D mission to create pathways for diverse populations to access postsecondary opportunities. The individual in this position will serve 95 individual high school participants in the Upward Bound program. The Study Skills Instructor will represent the University of Washington's Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity at our partner high schools

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • 70% Provide direct service to program participants, including teaching, tutoring, and mentoring in 1-on-1, small group, and whole class instruction formats. Topics may include algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, statistics, physics, financial literacy, and SAT preparation.

  • 10% Assess student work and progress; create lesson plans and materials for individuals, small groups, and whole class instruction.

  • 5% Keep accurate and detailed records of student participation and progress.

  • 5% Plan and implement program activities, including Summer Academy math department coordination and field trip planning and supervision, among others.

  • 5% Attend meetings to share information and build relationships among numerous stakeholders, including the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity, College Access Unit, high school staff and/or math departments, and community partners.

  • 5% Actively collaborate with the Upward Bound team; provide and receive input on approach, strategies, and additional resources to help students individually and as a larger group MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in education and At least two years of professional, full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience over multiple years) teaching math subjects (including Algebra I, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and/or Statistics) to students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and/or disabled backgrounds. Washington State Teacher Certification preferred. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Past TRIO participant, and/or bilingual preferred.

  • Experience with federal regulations and with federal TRIO programs, which support the educational development of low-income, first-generation college attendees, and underrepresented students preferred.

  • Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those of the students served by the project preferred.

  • Understanding of partner schools and communities, and Washington state college access programs and college admission requirements preferred.

  • Washington State Teacher Certification preferred.
