Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Sr. Staff Scientist in Seattle, Washington

Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first and largest cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN). Careers Start Here.

At Fred Hutch, we believe that the innovation, collaboration, and rigor that result from diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission of eliminating cancer and related diseases. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an antiracist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, antiracism, and inclusion.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2000, HVTN is the world’s largest publicly funded multi-disciplinary international collaboration facilitating the development of vaccines to prevent HIV/AIDS. The HVTN conducts all phases of clinical trials, from evaluating experimental vaccines for safety and immunogenicity to testing vaccine efficacy. In 2020, the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) was constituted, a collaboration between four US government-sponsored clinical trials/research networks: HVTN, HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG), and the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC). The HVTN Leadership Operations Center, based at Fred Hutch, was designated the operations center for CoVPN vaccine trials. Since its inception, the CoVPN has seen implementation of 5 large 30,000-person efficacy trials of COVID-19 vaccines, as well as additional observational studies and clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines at more than 120 US and international sites. The Statistical and Data Management Center (SDMC) of both the HVTN and CoVPN, also based at Fred Hutch, provides statistical design and analysis support, and houses datasets pertaining to all HVTN and CoVPN vaccine trials.

The Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Epidemiology (BBE) Program within the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division of Fred Hutch is seeking a Senior Staff Scientist to serve as Lead Statistician in support of HVTN and CoVPN research and publications, in collaboration with other members of the BBE program and scientists within the HVTN and CoVPN research community.

  • Contribute statistical methods development arising from problems in vaccine statistical science.

  • Maintain current knowledge of and contribute to advancements in the vaccine prevention research field through participation in professional organizations, scientific conferences, reading industry journals, and publication of manuscripts.

  • Perform other tasks as required.

  • A successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in biostatistics, epidemiology, or applied statistics.

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related working experience.
