As the Lead Development Engineer, you will build brand standards working closely with your Product Strategy/Design lead partners, and then lead the creation the operating platform and supporting strategy to fuel the growth of this important category aligning with REI’s commitment to sustainability, quality, and performance.

As Lead Development Engineer for Footwear, you will:

  • Partner closely upfront with Strategy and Design on the strategic and creative direction for Co-op Brands footwear, defining brand standards, establishing REI specific lasts.

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional and multi-national product creation leaders to strategically define building the engineering and development infrastructure and processes that the business will scale successfully upon between US/Asia team and factories.

  • Use your expertise and experience to provide leadership and influence/ collaborate on decision making across x-functional partners.

  • Lead the prototyping, testing, and validation of concepts in collaboration with your design, testing, insights, and manufacturing partners. complex technical engineering/development skills to create cutting edge and industry leading footwear from concept through commercialization.

  • Lead/manage direct report team members in US and in Asia. Requiring demonstrated capability successfully manage and develop culturally diverse and remote team members.

  • Manage multiple complex footwear projects through Design, Development, Validation and into Commercialization & Manufacturing.

  • Drive adaption of sustainable materials and construction methods to progress against REIs climate commitment.

Bring your passion and expertise

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Design, Biomechanics, or other applicable technical degrees.

  • 6+ successful years of relevant work experience in product development of high-performance footwear.

  • Technical expertise in footwear product development with an advanced knowledge of the total footwear construction process including outsole/midsole blueprints, pattern engineering, blueprint and tooling creation, material construction, testing, and costing.

  • Advanced understanding of manufacturing capabilities, anticipating issues, problem solving with timely resolution.

  • Strong understanding of Lab, fit, wear and biomechanical testing, specification concepts and processes.

  • Proven ability and desire to lead and influence in collaborative, team oriented and complex global environment to meet strategic objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop highly productive relationships with individuals and teams that are made up of diverse disciplines and cultural backgrounds resulting in effective working relationships across the company

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with an advanced ability to communicate new ideas, concepts and functional expertise within project teams and to external stakeholders.

  • Strong presentation skills and professional knowledge of PowerPoint, Keynote, or other electronic means to communicate new concepts or ideas. Technical writing capability a plus.

  • Demonstrated project management skills - keen attention to detail in planning, organization, and execution of tasks (self and through others).

  • Ability to anticipate how a decision made can affect our customers, our partners, our products, or other departments’ operations and/or morale; “connecting the dots.”

  • Curious and open minded; always open for a challenge, inventive, creative. With the ability to challenge the status quo – always looking at improving our products and processes while also displaying a willingness to dive into the details.

  • Strong computer skills including experience with Illustrator, MS Office software. Progressive work experience in CAD. Rhino preferred, other 2D-3D CAD applications, Crispin for Pattern engineering.

  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time
