VMware Sr Information Security Engineer - Opportunity for Working Remotely in Seattle, Washington

We are responsible for managing the Vulnerability Management lifecycle globally for Commercial, Cloud and Government resources with a footprint nearing half a million assets. In addition, we are responsible for maintaining corporate compliance of a wide portfolio of attestations that include FedRAMP IL5 (High), SOC2, IRAP, I24, CE+, PCI-DSS, ISO and others.

As a Sr Information Security Engineer for the team, your support will help the team focus on building/refining our methods of managing the Vulnerability Management lifecycle using automation strategies and evaluating emerging industry tools and techniques.

We have a highly collaborative high functioning team that is enabled to manage their work responsibilities independently and we encourage synergy between colleagues to help team members realize their best work.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?

We need someone who provide broad technical analysis of our program and provides opportunities to drive efficiency and accuracy of the program at Enterprise scale. This may involve automation via languages like Python, GO, or Java Script for recurrent tasks.

  • Within the first 30 days, get to know the team and develop a high-level understanding of the team’s technical domain, scope, and responsibilities. Begin operating as a part of your team.

  • Within the first 90 days, understand the context of the team and begin evaluating some of the broad challenges we face. Know where connections with other parts of the program should be made to address overlapping concerns and embrace opportunities to create cross team tool interfaces. Begin operating as a thought leader on team and begin developing relationships across other teams.

  • Within the first 120 days, by working with leadership and your peers, identify opportunities to deploy solutions that will improve the efficiency and accuracy of the team. Begin to contribute as a thought leader and subject matter expert.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis?

  • Your highest priority is prioritizing the feedback of the analysts and customers in the program and evaluating/deploying solutions to improve accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness at scale. In addition, this role will look for opportunities to mentor analysts and Jr. Engineers with more advanced methods and strategies.

  • You will also spend time contributing to conversations with leadership about the posture of information security across the vast architecture footprint. You will influence allocation conversations and participate in hiring strategies for future analysts and engineers on the team.

  • The rest of your time is open to how you can make the biggest impact to the program’s objectives. That may be:

  • Writing code for your team as an Individual Contributor

  • Stewarding the program's culture and health by establishing best practices or guiding principles for teams

  • Facilitating cross-program communication and collaboration

  • Increasing transparency by creating a feedback loop between teams and leadership about the program's strategy, its business goals, and OKRs

  • Anything else you think adds value to our program or your teams

What is the leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like?

This Sr Information Security Engineer role will report to the Sr. Manager of Vulnerability Management Global (Mike Henkelman) who leads the program under the VMOS department of Nickaus Combs (Director, VMOS). The VMOS Department is led by a balanced leadership team, composed of a department Director, two Sr Managers (Vuln Management and Red Team), a tools development team, and a pool of information security analysts and engineers to handle Red Team and Vuln Management responsibilities. Collaboration with this leadership team and your peer engineers will be core to your work.
