The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Specimen Processing Technician.

This position supports Prospective and Customized Biospecimen Procurement and Annotation. This position has operational access to patient health information and clinical materials including pathology specimens and archival blocks and slides, and for these activities must adhere to the covered entity HIPAA Privacy and CLIA rules and has 'dotted line' reporting to the CLIA certificate holders and applicable clinical laboratory management staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technicians are responsible for the following: 1) Reviewing clinic and OR schedules for NWBT cases. 2) Obtaining a NWBT general protocol consent (including research only biospecimens) pre-operatively or in SCCA clinics. 3) Coordinating the collection and processing of biospecimens and associated data for basic research and clinical trials between various care teams. All remnant clinical specimens will be obtained within an approved Surgical Pathology or Lab Medicine and Pathology clinical stream. Technicians are responsible for knowing these standard procedures and policies as well as all research requirements and protocols. Collection and processing activities cover multiple areas and technicians will rotate between these areas as appropriate: a) Clinic or pre-operative area: gathering of IRB approved clinical information such as questionnaires and research only samples such buccal swabs, cores, urine and blood samples. b) Operating rooms: Intraoperative blood work with anesthesia teams, including special timed protocols for prospective blood and sterile biospecimen collections under pathology direction. c) Pathology gross rooms and frozen section rooms non-sterile collections of tissue and processing of specimens after tissue has been reviewed by pathology attendings, senior residents or pathology assistants (PAs). 4) Technicians are responsible for communicating clinical histories associated with the specimens and the requirements of the research protocols to teams in all of these areas, recording all parameters associated with the specimens and data procured (cold ischemia time, size of specimen, etc.), reporting on this data, and communicating with research staff the specifics of the procurement and arrangements for distributions of biospecimens. 5) Technicians are responsible for communicating any potential procurement activities after hours to the designated moonlighting staff. 6) Technicians will be responsible for the quality of the specimen, ensuring that biospecimens are dissected appropriately, processed as quickly as possible, maintained at the appropriate temperature. Technicians will ensure a scout slide is created for solid tissue specimens and is reviewed by the pathologist to determine percent necrosis and percent neoplasia, will review the final path report to make sure that there aren’t inconsistencies or unexpected results from the biospecimen collected for research and that there is a notation in the pathology report that discloses that tissue was collected for research from that case. 7) Technicians must ensure that all releases of biospecimens and information are appropriate and consistent with the patient consent, research protocol and IRB approvals. All distribution is logged and signatures are obtained from research staff on distribution. 8) Technicians are responsible for biospecimen short-term storage and maintenance of freezer space 9) Technicians, with proper certification and approvals, including study specific IRB approvals, may perform other procedures with direct patient access such as phlebotomy and patient questionnaires. 10) Technicians may further annotate biospecimens per approved protocols, query clinical databases and records and pull archived pathology materials for review. 11) Technicians may assist with other service lines, such requests for research use of archival specimens. 12) Technicians may train other staff on procedures, including students. 13) Other duties may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Two years of college-level science in an applicable field OR High School graduation or GED Certification AND one year of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory OR equivalent education/experience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: •Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively, good problem-solving skills. •Excellent oral and written communication skills. •Knowledge of medical terminology to screen for appropriate tissue collection and experience with abstraction of medical information from patient charts. •Knowledge of universal precautions, lab safety procedures and blood borne pathogens. •Ability to distinguish and identify human tissues.

•Previous experience involving direct patient contact. •Ability to lift 50 lbs in order to lift freezer racks and transfer liquid nitrogen tanks as needed. •Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.

DESIRED: •Have knowledge of HIPAA and CAP/CLIA requirements for the research use of archival clinical samples, experience obtaining informed consent, and familiarity with Institution Review Board (IRB) requirements.
