The SoM medical school program serves the five-state WWAMI region: Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.

The School of Medicine Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives and Project Management (Senior Director) plays a critical role in ensuring the seamless operation and strategic advancement of high-level projects for one of the nation’s leading medical schools. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the mission of improving public health through excellence in education, research, and clinical care.

Reporting to the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance the Senior Director serves as senior strategic project director and advisor on projects affecting administrative, operational, and strategic matters. This role involves senior management responsibility for a wide range of projects, committees and activities supporting these projects and committees. This position will require collaboration with senior leadership across the SoM and UW Medicine. This position will help develop and implement strategic initiatives that are innovative while aligning with the mission and goals of the SoM and UW Medicine. This position leads initiatives to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness while identifying opportunities for process improvement and best practices.

This position directly impacts the overall strategy and planning for both short and long-term decisions made by senior leadership. The Senior Director will draw from their industry knowledge and expertise to navigate operational and strategic decisions which have a high level of complexity, often where there may not be precedent. This role must be diplomatic, resourceful, and flexible in order to manage the various stakeholders and interest groups throughout UW Medicine, the SoM and the University of Washington.

As the senior leader accountable for the strategic initiatives, projects and guidance, the Senior Director will work with key internal and external staff and leaders to lead key strategies in partnership with UW Medicine Finance and operations to set goals, maximize revenue opportunities, evaluate partnerships, and ensure operational effectiveness.

This position is highly visible, requiring a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, knowledge of the programs, services, and projects at the SoM and UW Medicine. Attention to detail, and the ability to quickly build and maintain positive relationships with key leaders and managers across the health system and associated organizations is paramount.

The work performed by the Senior Director are high-level projects across UW Medicine and the SoM which have direct impact on UW faculty and academic departments, while also managing relationships with UW Medicine and partner hospitals and clinics.

It will be critical for the Senior Director to quickly grasp the overall mission and objectives of UW Medicine and its' entities, as well as the existing and developing clinical partnerships, affiliations, and joint ventures. The Senior Director will regularly lead and attend high-level meetings and respond to inquiries from stakeholders, both internal and external.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Initiatives and Project Management: • Manage and oversee high-level UW Medicine special projects as assigned by the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance, including activities related to clinical effort and funding, strategic planning for the team, and other identified areas. These projects may be requested by UW Medicine Vice Presidents, SoM Associate Dean’s, the Faculty Business Planning Officer and other high-level UW Medicine partners. • Develop project plans including budget, timelines, milestones, and deliverables, and monitor progress, providing regular updates to senior leadership. • Identify, design and implement changes that improve financial stability. • Continuously improve processes and toolkits. • Ensure projects are completed on time within scope, and budget. Identify and mitigate risks. • Utilize data and analytical capabilities to interpret and analyze project-related data, ensuring data-driven decision-making and effective project outcomes.

Committee Administration: • Serve as the primary staff administrator supporting the Clinical Department Funding and Total Faculty Effort Governance Committee as well as other high-level committees. Lead efforts to organize and prioritize strategic topics for committee agendas, ensuring alignment with the overarching goals of the SoM. • Facilitate the collection, analysis, and dissemination of relevant information to support informed decision-making by the committee. Develop comprehensive briefings and reports to present data and recommendations effectively. • Manage follow-up communications, ensuring that action items and decisions are clearly conveyed and implemented. Maintain robust communication channels between the committee, sub-committees, and other key stakeholders. • Provide administrative support to all sub-committees and ad-hoc working groups associated with the Clinical Department Funding and Total Faculty Effort Committee. Ensure these groups have the necessary resources and information to achieve their objectives and progress as planned. • Act as a liaison between the committee and the Vice Dean for Administration and Finance. Address and resolve any issues that arise, ensuring seamless communication and problem-solving.

Communication and Collaboration: • Maintain effective communication channels with senior leaders, faculty, staff, and external partners. • Develop and disseminate comprehensive reports and presentations on administrative and financial matters to inform decision-making. • Build and maintain strong relationships with key constituents across UW Medicine and affiliated institutions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration, or a related field. • At least 5 years of senior-level experience in an academic medical center or university setting, with demonstrated expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and administrative leadership.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS • 7 or more years of senior-level experience in an academic medical center or university setting, with demonstrated expertise in financial management, strategic planning, and administrative leadership. • Advanced knowledge of organizational processes, protocols, and procedures in higher education.
