Key job responsibilities

  • Leadership & Vision: Independently manage a high-performing software development team. Set and communicate the team’s strategic direction and vision, aligning with organizational goals.

  • Project Management: Oversee the development of cross-functional software solutions, ensuring projects align with the business's long-term goals and comply with Amazon’s high standards.

  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Act as the main point of contact between your team and other internal stakeholders, including leadership and adjacent teams, to ensure projects are prioritized appropriately and meet company standards.

  • Technical Oversight: Evaluate and assure the quality of software solutions. Understand and oversee the architecture of the systems your team develops, making sure they solve the intended business problems efficiently.

  • Innovation & Optimization: Drive initiatives to optimize project delivery and system performance, reducing the risk of failure modes like misaligned requirements or insufficient testing.

  • Team Development: Mentor and support the growth of your team members, particularly in areas like technical skills enhancement and career development.

A day in the life

As a SDM your day is characterized by a dynamic mix of strategic planning and hands-on management. You’ll start by reviewing the progress of current projects with your team, discussing technical challenges, and brainstorming solutions.

Midday, you might engage with other leaders across Amazon to sync on cross-departmental initiatives or represent your team in strategic planning sessions.

Throughout the day, you'll provide guidance on technical architecture decisions, review code or design documents, and help your team prioritize tasks. Your goal is to ensure that your team’s efforts align seamlessly with both immediate needs and the broader vision for Amazon’s Enterprise Engineering solutions

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
