Amazon Software Development Manager - AWS Firmware Services in Seattle, Washington

AWS Firmware Services provide the underlying server management infrastructure used by every server in Amazon, from EC2 to S3 to DynamoDB and beyond. Consequently, we own some of the most sophisticated software anywhere, including firmware and back-end service infrastructure. Optimizing the dynamics of ever-changing environmental conditions, monitored with millions upon millions of sensors, is a massive challenge, and we love it!

We are looking for a seasoned Software Development Manager to lead a team that builds services to run the AWS Firmware engineering business. You will lead a team of world-class software developers who thrive on creating innovative, scalable solutions for real-world infrastructure firmware services problems. You will be part of larger development efforts to build, validate and support firmware in diverse technology domains from embedded software to large-scale distributed software systems, using proprietary and open source technologies.

We are looking for an experienced Software Development Manager to build and own firmware services for the AWS hardware infrastructure business. The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative, hands-on leader seasoned in building and leading software teams developing services to manage firmware delivery and server infrastructure at scale.

As a manager in this team, you will be leading a team of highly motivated software developers that thrives on solving challenging problems with innovative solutions. The team couples deep knowledge of the software stack operating within a cloud environment, software development skills set and scalable software engineering techniques to solve real world business automation problems. You would lead a team building, validating, and operating software solutions in diverse technology domains from embedded software platforms to large-scale distributed software systems in Java, Python and other languages using proprietary and open source technologies and Amazon services alike.

You will lead a team responsible for development and operation of firmware services focussed on all aspects of the firmware lifecycle, firmware process automation and infrastructure at scale. You will lead new feature development efforts from concept to launch and beyond. You will establish strategic vision and drive execution in defining and delivering new products and services. This is a fast-paced position where you will be challenged to think on your feet. You’ll work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. AWS Engineers are shaping the way people use computers and designing the future of cloud.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
