Amazon Web Services is looking for an engineer to build the future of Internet of Things (IoT). AWS IoT Device Management makes it easy to securely register, organize, monitor, and remotely manage IoT devices at scale. With AWS IoT Device Management, you can register your connected devices individually or in bulk, and easily manage permissions so that devices remain secure. You can also organize your devices, monitor and troubleshoot device functionality, query the state of any IoT device in your fleet, and send firmware updates over-the-air (OTA)—all through a fully managed web application. This role is part of AWS IoT Fleet Indexing under AWS IoT Device Management. AWS IoT Fleet Indexing makes it easy to index, search, and aggregate device data from multiple sources. AWS IoT Fleet Indexing searches through tens of millions of devices and handles high TPS. The service is critical to multiple services within the organization and works in tandem with these services.

We are seeking innovative, focused and practical engineers to join us as we build multiple new services. As a software engineer, you will work closely with senior engineers, contribute to overall architecture, and own and deliver operationally sustainable web services to AWS customers. Along the way, you will learn how to build scalable services and work with some of the brightest minds in the IoT space.

Our Software Engineers do so much more than just write code. SDEs contribute and influence across the Software Lifecycle, whether in requirements definition, architectural, deployment, or closing the loop from operational software on to the next cycle of idea generation.

On-call Responsibility

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

We are looking for people that are self-driven, able to deal with ambiguity, passionate about innovating, working on challenging highly scalable distributed systems problems, and motivated to learn about a broad set of technologies. Being a team player is a must. You will be working daily with your team members to lead the feature releases, advising on operational improvements and other day-to-day development activities. You'll have opportunities to make those around you better, participate in designing new software, do code reviews, and most importantly ship code. You will love to work backwards from our customers to design and develop new features. You will be challenged to scale and improve the performance of a service that has high TPS.

Key job responsibilities

• Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design, and bring innovative products and services to market.

• Design and build innovative technologies in a large distributed computing environment and help lead fundamental changes in the industry.

• Create solutions to run predictions on distributed systems with exposure to innovative technologies at incredible scale and speed.

• Build distributed storage, index, and query systems that are scalable, fault-tolerant, low cost, and easy to manage/use.

• Design and code the right solutions starting with broadly defined problems.

• Work in an agile environment to deliver high-quality software.


  • Programming experience with at least one software programming language.

  • 1+ years of experience in software development


• Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field.

• Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices. Full stack experience is a bonus.

• Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers. • Experience with distributed systems and web services design and implementation.

• AWS product experience and development on the AWS platform.

• Experience communicating with users, software development engineering teams, management to collect requirements, describe software product features and technical designs.

• High sense of ownership, urgency, and drive. • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role

• Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role.
