The Smart Home team is focused on making Alexa the user interface for the home. From the simplest voice commands (turn on the kitchen light or turn down the heat) to more complicated and natural use cases that use the power of AI and LLM, such as “Turn on the new light in my office” or “Turn off all the lights, except the living room if the TV is on”. We are evolving Alexa into an even more intelligent, indispensable companion, that helps customers get the most out of the technology in their homes.

We are looking for a Software Development Engineer II that will help us maintain and raise the quality bar of Alexa customer experience. We build tools, services and developer experiences that enable Alexa Skill developers and Smart Home product developers to measure and improve their product quality and performance, thus positively impacting Alexa Smart Home customers.

Key job responsibilities

  • Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design, and bring innovative products and services to market.

  • Build, deploy, and maintain Native AWS infrastructure

  • Design and code the right solutions starting with broadly defined problems.

  • Build systems that are scalable, fault-tolerant, low cost, and easy to manage/use.

  • Support operational excellence initiatives.

  • Work in an agile environment to deliver high-quality software.

A day in the life

You will collaborate with other SDEs to design systems for Smart Home, and leverage the latest AWS technologies to build services to support them. You will functionally decompose complex problems into simple, straight-forward solutions. You are a person that has thrived and succeeded in delivering high quality technology products/services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift fast. You will be empowered to build out the future of smart home devices.

About the team

We are a team of Software Developers that is part of the Smart Home group. We work together to hold a high quality bar for the Alexa Smart Home experience. We ask each other questions and value our different perspectives. We seek to continuously improve, and take action every sprint to improve. We operate as an autonomous and self organizing team.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Seattle, WA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
