We are looking for a Senior Sotfware Development Manager (L7), who will be responsible for defining and delivering products in the predictive modeling domain with significant complexity and/or that have broad cross-organizational, global, or technology impact. Your work will focus on mechanisms for executing large product, process and engineering efforts that solve significantly complex problems. You will be trusted to operate with complete independence and are often assigned to focus on areas where the business and/or technical strategy has not yet been defined.

The PXT Central Science Team at Amazon combines economics, behavioral science, statistics, and machine learning to proactively enhance both Amazon and the lives and value of work for its employees. We are an interdisciplinary team which combines the talents of science and engineering to develop and deliver solutions that measurably achieve this goal. We invest in innovation and rapid prototyping of scientific models and software solutions to accelerate informed, accurate, and reliable decision backed by science and data.

Our team builds distributed, scalable, and highly available systems that make machine learning (ML) and econometrics models run faster. We own products ranging from data lakes to tools for ML and analytics to web applications and Gen AI powered software solutions integrated with other Amazon systems. Robust and user friendly software solutions, and data security and privacy are our top concerns.

As a Senior Software Development Manager (SDM), you will lead multiple teams of SDEs and collaborate with economists, academic scholars, machine learning scientists and other SDEs across the company to develop, test, and deploy services that implement a wide range of econometric and machine learning models and utilize Gen AI services. This requires the use of predictive science, sophisticated distributed systems, the processing and visualization of Big Data and application of advanced statistical techniques. A successful candidate will have a passion for innovation, interest in cutting-edge technology, and excitement about working in a high-impact domain.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature and breadth of the areas of interest, the ideal candidate will coordinate across many internal and external teams, and provide visibility to the senior leaders of the company with their strong written and oral communication skills. We need individuals with demonstrated ability to learn quickly, think big, execute both strategically and tactically, and motivate and mentor their team to deliver business values to our customers on time. They have creative and startup mindsets, and are always excited to take on new and ambiguous projects.

Key job responsibilities

You effectively partner with all levels of leadership. You will collaborate with Economists, Applied Scientists, Engineers, and business line customers across the company to build consensus. You design mechanisms to drive consistent execution, tracking, reporting and escalation for STLs and SDMs within the organization. You will represent, verbally and in writing, complex decisions, tough trade-offs, and potential solutions clearly to leaders to help them understand the decisions they have to make and what options they have. You will own and deliver WBRs, MBRs, QBRs, and OP1s while influencing organizational priorities, system owners, business, and technology direction. You manage cross-functional and cross-product communication to ensure all stakeholders are informed and needs aligned. You recognize when current programs are susceptible to prior failure patterns and actively steer leadership to avoid repeating these failures. You know when a design or solution requires additional technical guidance (e.g., from senior engineers or subject matter experts). You show excellent judgment in driving executive-level escalations. You deliver solutions that meet Amazon high standards for customer satisfaction, efficiency, stability, extensibility, simplicity, and operational excellence. You amplify your impact by educating the TPM and engineering communities (e.g., in your organization, at your location, or more broadly) on program management best practices. You participate, sharing knowledge and collaborating with other SDMs/TPMs.

You will:

• Define and own the mechanism to engage with the strategic and tactical partners and influence the stakeholders to drive the goal to increase adoption of the current PXTCS Tech products

• Define and own the mechanism to manage the stakeholders, the cross-org, cross-team, and cross-product dependencies for the Next Gen products initiative

• Design mechanisms to drive consistent execution, tracking, reporting, and escalation for STLs and SDMs within the organization

• Own and continually refine the Engineering Quarterly Product Planning + Workback plan process

• Own the mechanism to manage the cross-product and cross-team dependency across PXTCS products and teams as the org transitions to Domain-based structure

• Own the mechanism to manage Intake requests for the products and drive consensus across the science goals

• Own the Engineering WBR, MBR, QBR, and the contributions to the org’s OP1/OP2. Define and drive the mechanism for engineering prioritization, resource allocation, and tracking

• Amplify impact by educating the L6/L5 Engineering SDMs and TPMs on best practices

• Define the mechanism for the PMTs/SDMs to communicate goal status with crisp, accurate, timely updates to leaders which earn trust

• Lean in, solve problems, eliminate blockers, and escalate HDTs with excellent, well-written docs

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of engineering experience

  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 10+ years of planning, designing, developing and delivering consumer software experience

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

  • Experience managing multiple concurrent programs, projects and development teams in an Agile environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and developing large scale, high-traffic applications

    • Advanced degree (M.S. or higher) in Engineering, Data Science, or a related STEM field
    • Strong understanding of machine learning, statistical modeling, and data analytics.
    • Experience owning/driving vision and execution of ML products
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex model results to non-technical stakeholders
    • Proven track record of successfully launching a portfolio of products.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
    • Proficiency in techniques such as linear and logistic regression, decision trees, random forest, gradient boosting, etc.
    • Familiarity with various inference techniques
    • Familiarity with Feature selection, engineering, and evaluation
    • Advanced SQL skills and experience working with databases

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $198,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $342,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
