A Day in the Life

The Senior Area Director for the Coronary Renal Denervation (CRDN) Operating Unit reports directly to the Vice President of the business and serves on the CRDN US Leadership team. Medtronic’s CRDN business is at an exciting turning point, combining the mature Coronary market segment, the emerging Symplicity blood pressure procedure, and the opportunity to transform the cath lab through digital and data-driven technologies. This unique combination, united by shared customers (interventional cardiologists), cath labs, and overlapping patient populations, creates a synergistic and dynamic environment for growth.

The Senior Area Director, West Sales, is responsible for achieving US Commercial P&L targets, managing an annual US revenue responsibility of over $100M with growth in plan. This role involves leading the strategy, structure, and effectiveness of the US Sales organization. As a significant member of the CRDN Leadership team, the Senior Area Director contributes to and is accountable for the strategic direction and vision of CRDN in the United States.

A typical day involves overseeing the comprehensive performance of the sales organization, ensuring that revenue growth, market share, and operating margin targets are met. Coaching and leading the US Field Sales, and Commercial Managerial Leaders are key aspects of the role, along with providing leadership for key product launches and commercial initiatives across the West. This position demands a strong growth mindset, customer engagement, and collaboration among many stakeholders.

The dynamic and growing CRDN business seeks a passionate sales executive with a track record of building new therapies/markets and achieving success in high-growth, competitive business environments. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership in strategy and strong performance with customers and markets offering life-saving therapies and solutions. Additionally, the successful candidate will have experience managing a P&L, making data-driven decisions, building strong relationships, collaborating with leaders and cross-functional peers, and developing and leading high-performance teams.

  • Develop plans and execute strategies for business growth and achieving sales goals for the West Area.

  • Achieve profitable sales volume, market share and other key financial performance objectives.

  • Create a culture of success and ongoing business and sales goal achievement providing leadership to the sales organization’s management team, while fostering a culture of accountability, professional development, high-performance and ethical behavior.

  • Leads sales organization change initiatives by continuously assessing the needs for change, championing change initiatives and removing obstacles impeding performance.

  • Establish and maintain productive peer-to-peer relationships with customers and clinicians.

  • Actively participate in strategic planning, sales strategy development, forecasting, sales resource planning and budgeting.

  • Accountable for effective sales organization design, including sales job roles and commercial operations.

  • Investigate new business opportunities to create value for the business and customer and create demand for our products.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with Key Opinion Leaders to ensure on-going flow of information on product needs and market conditions.

  • Reinforce compliance with all Medtronic policies, business conduct standards and pricing strategies and addressing compliance issues swiftly.

  • Define sales processes that drive desired sales outcomes and identify improvements where and when required.

  • Put in place infrastructure and systems to support the success of the sales function.

  • Manage the talent agenda in alignment with the strategic business imperatives through succession planning, talent development, performance management and retention.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements / Experiences

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum 15 years’ prior sales and/or sales leadership experience, or Master’s / other advanced degree with a minimum of 13 years’ sales and/or sales leadership experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of managerial experience

  • Medical device sales experience

  • Experience managing a full P&L, beyond revenue

  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (up to 75% of the time; domestic and international).

Preferred Requirements / Experiences

  • Strategic thinker, strong business acumen, ability to think broadly (beyond sales), experience partnering with other business and functional leaders to drive portfolio optimization

  • Proven track record in scaled sales leadership (managing/leading other leaders), driving execution, organization and capability building, and managing performance (recognizing top performers, taking focused and timely performance improvement actions and motivating and developing capabilities across the entire sales team)

  • Customer centric with ability to create and leverage relationships

  • Proven strong relationships and collaboration with leadership team and peers

  • Passionate about patient impact and winning as a team

  • Proven track record over multiple years of meeting and exceeding sales targets in a similar size business

  • Adept at making data-driven decisions

  • Adept communication and demonstrated ability to create followership

  • Demonstrated experience in building new therapy/market and success in high growth business environments

  • Highly influential leader who can navigate highly matrixed environments. Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate and influence cross-functionally.

  • Demonstrated track record as a Sales Leader.

  • Deep knowledge or experience navigating large hospital systems and IDNs.

  • Strong relationships in interventional cardiology.

  • Experience in matrix management; collaboration with other operating/business unit

  • Experience in mature markets and with both disposables & capital equipment.

  • Significant change management experience.

  • Has created/implemented disciplined sales management processes, systems and practices.

  • Experience with alternate sales/field support models (remote sales, FIAs, clinicals, etc.)

  • Basic understanding of US reimbursement (Commercial and Medicare).

  • Multi-functional management experience (beyond direct reps: Sales Ops, Finance, Training, FIAs, Clinicals, Marketing, etc.)

  • Bias to action with ability to make fast organizational decisions while delivering results the right way.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$150,000 - $150,000

This position is eligible for an annual long-term incentive plan.

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

In addition to Base Salary, this position is eligible for a Sales Incentive Plan (SIP), which provides the opportunity to earn significant incentive compensation for achieving or exceeding your goals.
