The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering is seeking to hire a Senior Research Development Officer (SRDO). The SRDO will be responsible for increasing HCDE’s research competitiveness through targeted capacity building, supporting strategic initiatives, developing partnerships and interdisciplinary teams and large complex proposals, and research related professional development and programming. We seek a highly collaborative and versatile colleague with attention to detail, impeccable writing skills, and strong facilitation skills. The SRDO has two complementary roles: (1) facilitate the development and launch of large, collaborative research projects that include multiple investigators within the department and across the university; (2) support individual faculty members in identifying research funding opportunities and connecting with collaborators in service of those funding opportunities, and (for early career researchers) developing competitive research proposals.

For (1), the SRDO will provide leadership, strategy development, and management of large/complex research proposals. For (2), the SRDO will assist all faculty in identifying research opportunities and potential collaborators in the department, across the university, and in the broader community; and will work closely with junior faculty members to identify and understand funding opportunities and support the development of competitive proposals and develop new funding streams.

The SRDO will develop deep knowledge of individual faculty’s research agendas and programs, college-based and multidisciplinary research programs, and will participate in the expansion of existing programs and the development of new initiatives. They will both work with multi-collaborator teams of faculty to develop strategies for multi-million-dollar programs with broad impact. The SRDO will further develop and maintain relationships with federal and non-federal extramural sponsors in support of faculty research development efforts, with a focus on building a sustainable matrix of sponsorship from diverse sources, including collaborative research with industry, and will leverage faculty strengths and internal funding programs to map to key sponsor activities. The SRDO will strengthen the institutional infrastructure for promoting interdisciplinary research and scholarly development across the university, working closely with members of research support services across the network.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Research Initiatives – 40%

  • Identify potential private sector, government, and community partners for grants.

  • Monitor external funding opportunities and connect faculty to appropriate calls.

  • Connect with counterparts within other units or institutions to facilitate research collaborations external to HCDE.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate activities to build research capabilities and support the research culture in HCDE.

  • Assist in the design, preparation, and interpretation of analytical reports on department-wide research funding and expenditure trends and projections.

  • Review and authorize sponsored research proposals, agreements, and contracts via SAGE ensuring adherence to proper formatting and forms per sponsor requirements.

  • Collaborate with Grants Manager(s) to develop proposals for submission including advice and guidelines regarding financial resource needs, creation of project projects, aligned with individualized sponsor requirements, and communication with subaward sites regarding documents and deadlines.Pre-award Proposal Analysis and Support – 40%

  • Provide analysis of proposals prior to submission to provide the best possible opportunity of successful submissions.

  • Manage the preparation of complex proposal budgets, including cost sharing documentation and related narrative portions of proposals.

  • Act on behalf of investigators in communicating with research partners, sponsors, and UW offices of research administration.

  • Organize brainstorming sessions to develop proposals.

  • Translate research conversations into proposal outlines/drafts.

  • Determine viability of proposed research; address resource allocation requirements needed to ensure successful completion of aims; track effort and resource commitments on the part of investigators and staff.

  • Advise PIs on cost sharing requirements. Prepare cost share calculation and cost share addendum and other required documents related to grants applications.Post-Award Support for Large Collaborative Grants – 20%

  • Project management for funded proposals; support development of project structure, hiring staff, organizing and facilitating meetings.

  • Contribute to strategic discussions.

  • Support writing annual and final grant reports.

  • Coordinate with department and/or College research administration staff to correctly allocate payroll efforts; continuously review funding allocations for correlation to assigned work; Identify corrective strategies.

  • Coordinate faculty effort commitments and reporting. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Information Science, Business, Communications, Public Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of four years in pre- and post-award grants and contracts management. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic research processes in a diverse and competitive funding environment.

  • Ability to coordinate resources and delegate responsibilities to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to understand and interpret complex academic material from relevant disciplines.

  • Demonstrated ability to write in a clear, concise, and cogent manner.

  • Excellent project management, organizational, and record keeping skills.

  • Proficient with complex budget development, analysis and design of reporting tools.

  • Experience using database running queries and reports.

  • Strong critical thinking.

  • Demonstrated ability to function independently and proactively while exercising skill and informed professional judgment.

  • Ability to develop positive relationships with colleagues and external constituents.

  • Strong time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to effectively manage multiple and competing demands.

  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters in Engineering, Information Science, Business, Communications, Public Administration or related field.

  • Understanding of UW fiscal policies and procedures and grant and contract management policies and practices.

  • Experience with UW Systems particularly SAGE, eGC1, and Workday Finance.

  • Experience with federal grants and contracts policies and procedures.

  • Working knowledge of human centered design and engineering and related fields.

  • Experience interpreting, explaining, and helping individuals comply with complex policies.

  • Knowledge of research policies and procedures, including those of the University of Washington Human Subjects Division and the federal Office for Human Research Protections. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
