The Team

Vaccines are a core priority of the Gates Foundation and can save millions of lives a year when delivered effectively. The mission of our Immunization program strategy team is to urgently reach children, adolescents, and adults -- no matter where they live -- with the vaccines they need. Our goal is a world free of vaccine-preventable diseases, and we do this by working with countries, development partners, and civil society organizations, to make sure that vaccines and immunization are effectively prioritized and delivered. Robust and resilient immunization programs are critical to achieving the promise of vaccination and are a cornerstone of primary health care, and we work to ensure that there are sufficient, affordable supplies to meet demand. Your Role

As Senior Program Officer, New Vaccine Introduction, you will lead an impact-oriented, grant portfolio and research and analysis in support of specific antigen vaccine delivery work including grant-making, strategy development and internal and external partner coordination. Additionally, you will:

What You’ll Do

  • Develop, plan, manage and perform a wide range of activities in support of existing vaccine delivery strategies, prospect and develop sophisticated investment opportunities, grant management and external relationship management. This would include: prioritizing work to highest impact activities, ensuring evidence for policy changes, shaping strategies to ensure evidence leads to policy.

  • Review letters of inquiry and grant proposals; provide clear, concise and informative written analyses and recommendations for funding, including drafting and editing proposal summaries and progress reports for existing grants for review by foundation leadership.

  • Consult with grantees to achieve desired impact; conduct learning site visits, provide technical mentorship, convene meetings and apply and evaluate performance objectives.

  • Work with internal and external partners to craft global strategies to achieve program outcomes – providing input on the initiative strategies, product development priorities, and evidence/policy needs.

  • Manage internal processes and portfolio progress while ensuring documentation, grant budgeting and reporting. Improve operational efficiency and effectiveness to have the greatest time and health impact

  • Prepare and write briefs for internal stakeholders and synthesize existing literature. Provide written analysis of topics for foundation management. Fulfill data requests from leadership.

  • Represent the foundation or team in internal program strategy teams and external working groups related to area of expertise and responsibilities of the position to ensure alignment on shared goals and strategies.

  • Contribute to the design of new strategies, collaborations and implementation plans to ensure long-term sustainability and impact

Your Experience

  • Advanced degree with 7+ years of experience, or equivalent experience.

  • Solid understanding on vaccine delivery and markets with the ability to build technical credibility and interact on both a scientific and programmatic level with internal and external colleagues.

  • Proven ability to lead and influence others in a constructive, impact-focused manner including partners, including government, other donors, and grantees to create a common vision and visualize simple and effective but implementable solutions to complex problems.

  • Excellent program and project management capabilities – always driving towards clear results within a timeline.

  • Sound, clear critical thinking capabilities – can develop a set of options, analyze choices, make recommendations easily and independently.

  • Highest caliber of collaborative skills – is able to use different approaches with counterparts in various contexts and work inside a matrixed environment. Can lead teams from either the front or from behind.

  • Comfortable in a wide range of cultural, geographic and operational situations, demonstrating culturally sensitive behavior with a diverse range of people; lived experience in a low/low-middle income country a plus

  • Strong analytical, writing and verbal skills for communicating with a broad and diverse audience.

  • Demonstrates excellent individual judgement and can act independently but also knows when to pull in resources.

  • Growth mindset – curious about innovative approaches, able to change direction, willing to seek feedback and course correct.

The salary range for this role is $166,300 to $249,500 USD. We recognize high-wage market differences in Seattle and Washington D.C., where our offices are located. The range for this role in these locations is $181,200 to $271,800 USD. As a mission-driven organization, we strive to balance competitive pay with our mission. New hires salaries are typically between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint. Actual placement in the range will depend on a candidate’s job-related skills, experience, and expertise, as evaluated during the interview process.
