Our client is seeking an experienced biotechnology patent attorney who will be responsible for leading and executing against the strategy for their IP globally, including counseling management and colleagues on the legal implications of all corporate and business activities, developing and implementing legal strategies, leading a small team, and managing services provided by outside counsel. The attorney will report to the Chief Legal Officer and be responsible for developing and executing a global intellectual property strategy in support their drug creation platform and pipeline programs. They seek a team member who is willing to work with a sense of urgency, as well as someone who thrives in a dynamic team and high-performance culture. Travel to the Pacific West Coast monthly is a must. Responsibilities: * Partner closely with various research teams to identify potentially patentable subject matter as well as collaborate with other internal stakeholders (e.g., research, development, business development) on matters relating to the company's global IP portfolio. * Actively manage the drafting, filing and prosecution of patent applications worldwide, both directly and through management of outside counsel. * Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses, both directly and through management of outside counsel. * Communicate with executive leadership team on IP strategy and status of matters impacting the IP portfolio. * Review proposed research papers and other publications for any impact on patent strategies. * Develop and continually expands a thorough understanding of the company's current and planned business activities, products, competitors, and markets and keep abreast of developing legal trends, laws and regulations Qualifications: * J.D. degree from an accredited law school, admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction, and/or registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. * Minimum of 6 plus of experience practicing patent or intellectual property law in the life sciences. * Significant prior legal experience in the pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology fields, with an emphasis on preparation, prosecution, and IP analysis a must. * Strong preference for advanced scientific degree (Ph.D. or Master's) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry, immunology, genetics, structural biology, or related field. * The successful candidate will be capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, and will possess excellent analytic, legal drafting, and oral and written communication skills. * Experience in all aspects of U.S. and foreign intellectual property law relating to biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences at a law firm or a biotechnology/pharmaceutical corporation. * In addition to the basic qualifications listed above, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated leadership, management, and interpersonal skills, and creativity in applying analytical frameworks and solutions to issues. * Strong client service focus and ability to work independently and in teams, as well as excellent organizational skills, flexibility, and ability to prioritize workflows.
