Basic Function Support the undergraduate scientific instructional programs in the Department of Chemistry. Coordinate support services for a variety of courses and provide professional and technical support requiring a broad knowledge of chemistry. Under general direction of the Director of Undergraduate Services, coordinate day-to-day instructional support activities for undergraduate laboratory courses in chemistry, typically at the entry-level. Support the design and development of instructional programs and Teaching Assistant (TA) trainings and the design and construction of needed equipment and/or instrument systems. Develop laboratories or demonstrations based on literature descriptions. Provide support to courses requiring an emphasis on complex design and development tasks, such as the development of experiments or demonstrations where only general theoretical concepts are identified, or the design of instructional support applications based on current research findings. Support lecture demonstrations, working with instructors to determine needed materials, and maintain a calendar of scheduled demos and required tasks. Support Chemistry Undergraduate Storeroom operations, including inventory and budget maintenance, and hiring, training, and supervising student hourly employees.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities
Provide technical support for chemistry undergraduate laboratory courses and lecture demonstrations by way of the following tasks:

• Prepare reagents required for assigned laboratory courses. Distribute reagents, supplies, and other equipment needed for each lab class, assuring a sufficient amount available for each laboratory session. Promptly respond when reagents or supplies run low during a laboratory session.

• Set-up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment and computers used in the labs and/or obtain the necessary services to accomplish the required maintenance.

• Order chemicals, supplies, and equipment necessary within allotted budgets.

• Maintain the Undergraduate Storeroom in an orderly fashion, in such a way as to allow timely retrieval of storeroom items in routine use by Undergraduate Services and instructional staff. Maintain an inventory of items appropriate for routine use. Order storeroom chemicals, supplies, and equipment necessary for laboratory experiments within allotted budgets.

• Orient and instruct TAs regarding technical aspects of laboratory experiments, typically accomplished during scheduled TA training sessions. Demonstrate correct use of the laboratory equipment, discuss specific safety and chemical waste concerns, and describe difficulties or issues that may arise during the teaching of the lab. Prepare handouts with technical details or other information as needed.

• Be available to assist TAs in providing student support in the laboratory, often involving difficulty with laboratory equipment.

• Provide and maintain the laboratory safety manual in each laboratory. Assist with preparation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and adhere to both the letter and intent of the UW Chemical Hygiene Plan.

• Monitor laboratory safety practices used by students and TAs and provide correction or other feedback as needed. Evaluate TA performance at the conclusion of the quarter with respect to safety compliance as well as adherence to established Department and course procedures.

• Maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment. Coordinate to ensure that all laboratories are thoroughly cleaned at the end of each quarter they are in use. Recognize and assess laboratory or facility mechanical failures. Promptly report and/or request repairs using established departmental procedures.

• Assure compliance with guidelines for hazardous waste disposal. Maintain safe chemical waste storage within the laboratory and provide for proper neutralization and disposal of acids and bases.

• Collect and properly label hazardous waste for pick up by Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S). Develop experiments so as to minimize waste generation. Work with the Director of Undergraduate Services to propose waste streams to EH&S that may be handled via routine waste pick-up procedures.

• Coordinate lecture demonstrations. Provide instructors with available demonstration information and guidance in demonstration selection, researching new demonstrations as requested. Design, organize, and maintain a clear system to successfully communicate with instructors and manage lecture demonstration requests, scheduling, and modifications.

• Prepare reagents and other materials needed for lecture demonstrations. Set up equipment, materials, and any necessary media (e.g., projection, other audio visual) in advance of or at the lecture to ensure a successful in-class demonstration. Assist in setting up laboratory lectures that involve equipment used in the undergraduate laboratories and demonstrate correct usage of such equipment during lab lectures.

• Render first aid to students and TAs and fill out Incident Reports regarding laboratory accidents or injuries as needed.

• Assist in evacuating the laboratories during emergencies by serving as a floor warden.

• Edit and update laboratory manuals as directed by the Director of Undergraduate Services and course instructors. Update existing experiments to reflect current methodologies and develop, test, and write procedures for new experiments. Coordinate lab manuals for production and/or and student purchase and provide copies for instructors, TAs, and applicable staff.

• Maintain and update computer software and hardware and develop computer programs as necessary to enhance data acquisition, analysis, or transfer.

• Work with the instrumentation coordinator on the use of shared instrumentation in the Department (e.g., IR, UV, GC, MS) as needed for assigned laboratories.

• Make suggestions for investing operating funds in the assigned laboratories, acquire equipment bids, and assemble and submit purchase orders as directed.

• Perform other related duties as required. Minimum Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree with major study in science and two years of full-time experience as a Scientific Instructional Technician I or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Additional Experience:

• Computer experience, including Excel and Word.

• Ability to lift equipment weighing up to 32 pounds.

• Ability to obtain and maintain certification in CPR/First Aid, with recertification as required. Desired Qualities

• An advanced degree in chemistry or a related field.

• Experience teaching or supporting undergraduate instructional laboratories.

• Previous classroom and/or laboratory teaching or other similar experience.

• Knowledge of database operations and data acquisition.
