Reporting to the Chair of Sciences and Mathematics (SAM) in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Science (SIAS), this position exercises substantial responsibility for directing and controlling the laboratory activities and safety of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics. The position supervises staff, and regularly performs professional level administration and management of a non-routine nature which requires independent judgment and decision making. The individual utilizes specialized knowledge of laboratory sciences and has delegated decision making authority to allocate resources and establish policies, methods, procedures, and work rules for the program. Responsibilities also include curricular and research support, and safety and regulatory compliance for the Science and Tacoma Paper and Stationary buildings. This position is a member of a dynamic and collaborative group of faculty and staff within SAM.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Administration, Divisional, and Operation of Analytical Facilities

• Collaborate with SAM leadership to identify, prioritize, and develop policies and procedures for operations, promoting efficiency and consistency in day-to-day practices. o Assist in creation and maintenance of standard operating procedures (SOPs) necessary for certification and lab safety o Coordinate new programs upon safety certification o Work with SIAS Fiscal team, and laboratory coordinators, to coordinate small and large-scale equipment and supplies purchasing, including instrumentation and service contracts for all major lab and field equipment o Lead team in the creation and maintenance of SOPs and preventative maintenance routines performed in-house on instrumentation o Provide assistance in troubleshooting minor equipment issues, and coordinate with staff on major equipment issues o Consult with SAM chair on management and use of SAM laboratory-related budgets, ensuring appropriate course fee amounts and prioritizing use of funds • Assist with paperwork processing necessary for collection of specimens allowing specialized materials and equipment to be used at UW Tacoma • In collaboration with the team of coordinators and student lab assistants, ensure that equipment and other materials (stock solutions, etc.) are prepared for experiments for laboratory and classroom demonstrations. • In collaboration with the team of coordinators, assist in management, and ensure instruction is provided to, students, faculty, and adjunct instructors for all modern analytical instrumentation used in biology, chemistry, geology, and physics labs, including field courses. • Coordinate application for lab certifications and stay informed on the latest guidelines, policies, and best practices for certification. • As part of a team, plan Sciences and Mathematics curriculum and growth • Participate in task forces and committees with others across the UW Tacoma campus, contributing expertise and aligning SAM processes with institutional requirements. • Provide instructional lab support as needed

Laboratory Safety

• Serve as the Laboratory Safety officer for SCI and TPS Buildings • Coordinate floor wardens for buildings as necessary • Oversee laboratory safety training for all staff, faculty, and students • Serve as primary contact for facilities and campus safety for building issues • Manage yearly EH&S Lab Safety walk throughs for all laboratory spaces • Stay up to date & informed on EH&S safety requirements, trainings, etc.

Management and Supervision

• Direct staff serving in the roles of laboratory and research support. Ensure best experience for all who interact with lab staff o Laboratory Coordinators 4 FTE o Student Lab assistants • Supervise and develop staff teams responsible primarily for lab support and operational needs, including hiring and supervision, assigning and reviewing work, coaching, professional development, acting on leave requests and time sheets, and conducting performance evaluations. • Coordinate daily organization of laboratory preparation o i.e. gathering sheets, laminated check off system, weekly meetings, daily check-ins, maintenance of weekly and quarterly chore charts for student lab assistants, etc. • Work with other SIAS Staff and SAM Leadership in developing and implementing shared objectives and service standards. • Support onboarding and supervision of laboratory student research assistants • Manage coordination among staff, instructional, and research faculty to ensure smooth operation of both instructional and research activities • Establishing, coordinating and updating lab staff and students in lab safety training procedures/system • Coordinate the UWT Environmental Analytical Research Laboratory (EARL)

Curricular & Research support

• Support the curricular and research needs of the Division as directed by Division Chair and Director of Academic and Finance Operations • Assist with outreach and recruitment as Directed by Division Chair and Director of Academic and Finance Operations. • Utilize expertise to contribute to the development of curricular and research initiatives. • Review of SAM Laboratory Schedules • Collaborate with laboratory instructors on curricular development and innovation

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, geosciences, environmental sciences, or closely related field • Four or more years of increasingly responsible oversight of science laboratories to include supervisory or lead experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Knowledge and experience in laboratory hazardous waste management. Skill and experience with operation and maintenance of analytical instrumentation used in chemistry, biology, geosciences, and physics. • Proficiency in word processing and data management. • Ability to lead and provide logistical support for lab and field exercises. • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and as a supervisor that is flexible and proactive. • Experience multi-tasking and prioritize work tasks. • Ability to work well with a diverse array of faculty, staff, and students. • Ability to make independent decisions regarding lab needs, safety issues, and equipment and systems that are in their charge. • Strong organizational skills and experience balancing complex logistics.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A Master’s in chemistry, biology, geoscience, or environmental science. • Experience in an academic laboratory science program. • Field experience.
