Responsibilities

Virginia Mason is proud to offer our PACU 101 training program for nurses interested in the PACU. This is a full time paid 3 month training program. Mondays didactic classes 8 hours then work 3 10 hour shifts

Start dates for our Fall 2024 program:

Monday August 26th 2024 for newly hired RNs.

Description of new to specialty orientation: PACU 101 Specialty training will begin orientation on day shift and working (3) 10 hour shifts per week + one day per week in class. During this time, the orientee will attend didactic classes, nursing skills labs that are pertinent to the PACU and be paired with an experienced PACU RN for clinical orientation. The orientee will also be required to complete online learning modules specific to the area.

Length of orientation: This is a three-month paid training program with full benefits.

Classes/courses: PACU 101 is a comprehensive, blended educational program that is developed and facilitated by PACU nurse educators and based on latest, evidence-based Practice:

The PACU team cares for patients in all age ranges and all levels of acuity including ambulatory, inpatient, and critical care. Aspects of care include assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of post anesthesia care. The PACU nurses provide observation and monitoring of patients with particular attention to oxygenation, respiratory status, circulation/hemodynamic stability, level of consciousness, and temperature. You will also gain experience with managing airways and airway emergencies (i.e. laryngospasm, airway obstruction, stridor, and respiratory arrest)

The PACU nurses are also responsible for the management and evaluation of post anesthesia and postoperative complications including pain and nausea. The Registered Nurse in PACU holds the autonomy to determine readiness for discharge from PACU based on PACU scoring criteria.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications for this position include:

  • A current and valid Washington State Registered Nurse License

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing

  • Current BLS certification required.

  • ACLS certification required within 60 days of hire.

  • PALS certification required within 60 days of hire.

  • At least 1 year of hospital medical surgical or Tele/Progressive care experience within the last 5 years is strongly preferred

  • This position does require on-call shifts which may include working some weekends

  • Must be able to start work based on the dates above.

Preferred Qualifications for this position include:

  • Previous experience with starting IV’s preferable

Please note:

This position does require on-call shifts.

2-3 call shifts per month.

Call shifts are generally on the night shift with some weekend day shift call.

1 holiday on-call shift per year.

Pay Range

$43.99 - $63.9 /hour
