The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine (https://anesthesiology.uw.edu/) studies neural mechanisms mediating the effects of general anesthesia in the brain, as well as the brain circuitry engaged by arousal, pain, and motivate social behavior. This position will support collaborative research studies between the Heshmati Research Group and the Golden Lab in the Center for Neurobiology of Addiction Pain & Emotion. The Golden Lab focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms and circuits guiding motivated social behavior using rodent models, with a special interest in translational studies of reward, motivation, addiction, and depression.

The Heshmati Research Group in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary , Part-Time Research Technologist 1.

The Research Technologist 1 will perform technical procedures evaluating, selecting, and applying standardized scientific procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives; assignments require investigation of a limited number of variables and few complex features. This position works under direct supervision of senior researchers as well as directly reporting to Dr. Heshmati.

The individual in this position will be responsible for:

  • Experiment Assistance & Mice Colony Management = 70%
  • General lab operations support = 30%

    Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time: Experiment assistance and mice colony management = 70% The minimum major duties and responsibilities are as follows, under the guidance of the PI and senior researchers, with a direct report to Dr. Heshmati:

• Transgenic and wild-type mice colony management, including breeding and weaning • Set up breeding cages for genetic crosses and wean litters of mice • Collect samples for genotyping and/or perform genotyping PCR • Transfer mouse cages between facilities upon request • Track mouse colony census and provide reports to the supervisor • Communicate with vivarium staff and maintain compliance with animal protocols • General laboratory maintenance of vivarium and bench lab spaces • Assist Dr. Heshmati, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on various projects as required and within the scope of the position.

General lab operations support = 30%

• Assist with lab calendar and assigning lab tasks to undergraduate student volunteers • Assist with writing and maintaining lab protocols, licenses, and databases • Assist peer technicians and other support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments • Assist with updating laboratory websites • Procure and organize lab supplies • Maintain lab supply inventory

Minimum Qualifications Two years’ experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Other Required Qualifications

• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal • Demonstrates the ability to work independently • Strong ability to problem solve and an interest and willingness to learn new methods • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) • Must be highly motivated, organized, and punctual • Must be able to work collaboratively and respectfully in a team environment with excellent communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

• Laboratory research experience with animals, specifically Mice is preferred. • Experience with mouse colony management including breeding and genotyping. • Prior experience with solution preparation. • Familiarity with Python and general statistical methodologies.
