The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine is the third largest clinical department within the School of Medicine with 330 full-time faculty members, 460 courtesy faculty members, and over 350 staff. Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Other areas of excellence include Addictions, Autism, High Risk Youth, Neurosciences, and Trauma, and the Department is developing innovative new programs in Technology and Mental Health, Global Mental Health, Maternal and Child Mental Health, and Targeted Intervention Development. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Temporary Research Study Assistant.
The position may be renewed beyond one year, depending on qualifications, performance, and project needs.
The research assistant will support an ongoing study aiming to develop and pilot test an alcohol prevention program for fraternity and sorority-affiliated students. Human-centered design will be utilized to collaborate with fraternity and sorority members in the development of a program focused on increasing engagement in social activities that do not involve alcohol use. The study is a 5-year K23 Career Development Award (currently in Year 1) funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. Key responsibilities for this position include data management, contacting/tracking research participants, and supporting the management of undergraduate research assistants.
Responsibilities
• Assist with the revision of human subjects applications and consent forms in compliance with applicable regulations. • Assist with the creation, testing, and implementation of study systems and processes. • Assist with the monitoring and management of study data. • Interact with participants for the purposes of screening, providing compensation, and retention. • Assist with administrative duties including scheduling meetings, planning the meeting agendas, taking notes in meetings, and filing paperwork. • Implement research protocols and monitor participant adherence to protocol; take action to correct problems such as deviations from protocol requirements. • Assist in the modification of procedures for collecting and summarizing data. • Perform other related duties as assigned/required.

• Contribute to the collegial and collaborative environment of the study team. • Communicate effectively and professionally with all participants and study team members. • Delegate tasks using clear instructions; monitor task completion to ensure accuracy and timeliness; follow up when needed. • Troubleshoot and exercise effective judgment to resolve challenges. • Seek supervision in a timely fashion whenever appropriate. • Complete tasks in a timely and accurate fashion while maintaining participant safety and abiding by all study procedures; independently anticipate and plan for upcoming tasks. • Carry out complex tasks based on brief verbal or written instructions. • Maintain knowledge of all relevant study procedures and expectations (e.g., from IRB, funder, PI, and others). • Proactively identify and resolve instances of conflicting instructions, information, documentation, priorities, and/or project requirements. • In an ongoing manner, identify strategies to improve performance based on feedback and self-reflection. • Effectively manage competing time demands, prioritize appropriately while maintaining efficiency, and troubleshoot solutions when time management challenges arise. • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of all study systems related to task assignments; use study systems in a manner consistent with documentation and verbal instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Two years of college-level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR equivalent education/experience.
