POSITION PURPOSE
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology has a unique opportunity to work with Dr. Elizabeth Swisher and her research group, whose prime objective is studying the genetics, prevention, and treatment of ovarian cancer. The Research Scientist/Engineer Assistant (NE S UAW RSE) occupying this position will be trained to conduct research and evaluate the molecular genetics of ovarian cancer. The scope of the work involves working with a high volume of participants from the gynecologic oncology clinic, interaction and coordination with the clinical staff including physicians, nurses, surgical staff, and with community organizations and health systems.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Sample Processing: 50%

  • Coordinate sample processing and the organization of specimens.

  • Extract, purify and quantify nucleic acids from blood and tissue.

  • Keep careful and accurate laboratory records.

  • Extract and purify Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells.Tissue Bank Data Maintenance: 25%

  • Frozen tissue sectioning and staining (H&E, IHC).

  • Assist with maintaining tissue biorepository.Laboratory Maintenance: 25%

  • Assist in day-to-day laboratory upkeep by maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies.

  • Enter data and maintain lab databases.

  • Analyze data results and develop rational explanations.

  • Troubleshoot protocols.

  • Perform related duties as required.

  • Keep careful and accurate laboratory records. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and less than one year of relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 1 year of laboratory research experience.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload; use efficient workflow process.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Skilled with Microsoft Office environment.
